Had an epiphany this weekend...

The best way to order powder is to order 25 pounds from Powder Inc so you get free shipping. I did that a few years ago even though I had a good supply already. I asked a couple of other people if they wanted to go in on the order. One said he wanted 6 pounds and the other wanted 5 pounds. So I ordered the 25 pound case.

Then when it got here and it was time to divvy up the order my buds backed out and one guy bought a pound and the other 2 pounds. So I was left with the rest and the bill for 23 pounds. So now I have 32 pounds of real BP on hand and am glad I have it. I would buy more if I found someone else in this area who wanted to split a case but next time I will get their money up front.

But if you want less than 25 pounds the Powder Vally looks like a deal.

I looked at Grafs again and except for Swiss and Goex Musket they are still out. Has anyone used the Grafs brand powder and how did you like it? I still have some of the Elephant brand I bought from them 25 years ago. It seems to work OK. Never shot it over a Chrono but it always went off.

I shoot the grafs branded 3F. It works just fine, gives plenty of accuracy from my rifles.

Thanks. But you don't have to repeat yourself. :D:evil::neener:

Just kidding. Thanks for the info. I was looking on the Grafs site at their powder and it says since 2020 it is loaded for them by Goex. I wonder if its the same quality as Goex or if its left over leavings or inferior in some way? I would like to have another 10 pounds of 3F. I gave my bud some a while back and would like to replace it. If its the same then that would be great at $17 per pound.

Never having used actual goex, I can't comment. It isn't the equal of OE, but neither is standard goex. For the limits of how well I shoot open sights, the Grafs meets my needs. Would not hesitate to hunt with it either.

That was a double tap. Mighty impressive with a muzzleloader...

Welcome!
Sadly you may find that, between Covid boredom, lower expenses due to lack of socializing, stimulus checks and Italian arms shut downs, BP guns are also going for premiums as well (when you can find them.) Great time to be selling!

Been thinking of doing that myself. The .36 1851 Navy is okay, but it's very heavy for the caliber and the Sheriff 1858 I don't shoot with blackpowder. I could probably sell both and get $800 total right now.

Be careful about selling powder to another shooter who turns out to be an undercover FBI agent. This new administration is hellbent on finding insurrectionists, even if they need to trap law abiding sportsmen to do it. Best to hold on to your supply, especially with lean times ahead.

Over the last 20 years or so all the black powder I've bought (plenty) has been ordered by mail. It's much cheaper for 5 lbs and up, and I usually ordered 25 lb cases. I started muzzleloader hunting in the 1960s and mixed it in with modern rifles. But years ago I started hunting exclusively with flintlocks for small and large game in all seasons. Cheap flint locks are hit or miss so I sold most modern guns and ordered a couple-three hand built flintlocks. A decent flintlock is as reliable as the sunrise. The learning curve is somewhat steeper than for a caplock rifle so hands-on help is always invaluable. I prefer the full stock flintlock longrifle over all the others (Kentucky-Pennsylvania are the same thing).
A .32 or .36 for small game and a .45, .50 or .54 for large game. Patched round ball works best and is easier/cheaper by far; never used anything else, myself.
