Finally found a smith who knew what to do. When I told him what was happening he milled the buffer without my telling him how to fix it. I'm impressed. I sure thank you guys for telling me how to cure my buffer problem. I haven't shot it yet but when I close the action I can see the bolt carrier engage the buffer and push it off the detente pin.

You're quite welcome. No telling how many lower receivers have been condemned and removed from service due to the location of a hole being off a couple thousandths. I've personally had 3 ARs do this so I know I can't be the only one. :banghead:

For those who don't know what we're talking about, here's a link to the original thread:

The PDF showing the fix is post #6

Didn't someone mention that the upper could be the culprit here if the barrel isn't screwed in far enough? (or out of spec) Something definitely is wrong when the carrier doesn't extend back far enough to slightly engage the buffer...completely agree, but is the buffer retention pin hole the only thing that can be out of whack to cause this issue?

I guess if another upper was swapped in that did the same thing on this lower...that would point at the lower being the component that's out of whack. Never built or worked on an AR so I'm not sure if the barrel could be out of spec enough that the bolt is locking up in it too far forward...but it sounds possible to my small mind.:)

Yes it could be any number of things combined to throw the tolerances off. But REGARDLESS of the actual culprit, this will fix the problem on an otherwise functional AR. It is also the cheapest/easiest route. Would I do this to a gun that my life will depend on? NO--that gun would get replaced. But I'm betting probably 80% of the ARs out there are not duty weapons and a fix this simple to save changing major components is worth it in my book. YMMV

Mtrmn....I agree...relieving the buffer face as you've suggested will cure a multitude of sins and is elegant and simple! Even if something else is out of spec...but otherwise serviceable, that buffer mod makes it work a heck of a lot easier than just about anything else that could be done. I really like the clever yet simple things!:) The buffer mod is stored in my memory bank for possible use down the road if needed...and the neat thing is once you've seen such a neat solution to a problem a similar fix might be doable in other machinery outside of firearms. Things like this make me happy to be a forum member.
