So, I've decided that the mini y comp's insanely loud report outweighs its benefits. My AR is from the ban period so the comp is permanently affixed. What's the best route to get a new flash hider on it?

New barrel? This one has maybe 2500 rounds through it.

Send it off for someone to thread it?

Trying to get bang for the buck here.

I'm thinking about a Vortex or Phantom as the replacement.

Barrel was the only way to get mine off. It was 14.5" barrel with the Y-comp making up the rest. That comp was great to keep it on target, but couldnt do so b/c the blast was making me flinch! :D Barrel replacement is the cheapest, and easier than trying to pawn the upper off onto someone that doesnt know that comp!

If your rifle is a Bushmaster, give them a call. They will probably replace the mini-Y for you or re barrel the upper for a good price.
I called them just 2 weeks after buying my AR with the mini-Y. They said send them the upper and they'd take care of me. I did and got my rifle back with a 16" match grade heavy barrel, all for the cost of shipping the upper. Bushmaster did me right.

We can remove your Mini-Y, thread it for 1/2x28, and install a KA-1222 if you'd like. It is much more pleasant than the Mini-Y, cuts flash, and weighs almost the same as an A2 birdcage. We have special jigs that let us turn a complete AR upper on centers without removing the barrel, makes the job a lot quicker. What is your barrel length without the Mini-Y? A lot of the Mini-Y's were permanently attached to 14.5" M4 barrels to make the 16" legal length. We can permanently attach the new attachment if that is the case.

Thanks for the ideas. Hadn't thought about just calling Bushmaster... I might give them a ring and see what they have to say.

After looking at new barrel costs, I definitely don't think I need to go the new barrel route with as few rounds as I've had through this one.

Called Bushmaster. They said they couldn't help since it's a rifle from the ban days. Rep told me they aren't set up to remove the permanently affixed comps and permanently add a new one. Sounds a little fishy for a gun maker that used to do it day in and day out but it looks like the gun smith route for me...

I shot one Bushy with that Mini-Y on it.

It had the least recoil, and by far the most blast directed at the shooter of any AR I've ever tried.

The practically non existant recoil was very nice, but was completely canceled out by the fact that my ears were ringing after about 15 rounds.

I wonder what has happened to Bushmaster? When I bought my "ban" rifle with the mini-WHY on it, it only took me a couple hundred rounds to call Bushmaster and tell them the mini-WHY sucks. They were very quick to offer a solution and I only ended up paying for shipping. I was so impressed then that I'm left very disappointed and surprised now. I didn't think you'd get out as good as I did, but I figured they'd be more helpful.
