Hi all. Ive decided to get a muzzle brake for my AR and Ive settled on either the Y-Comp or Mini Y-Comp. Ive read all about them and they seem to work great albeit extremely loud, which Im kinda looking forward to:D. The only thing I havent figured out is if their is any functional difference between the two. Does the Y-comp reduce recoil more than the mini version, is it louder, or is the other way around? For those of you who have one or have shot both of them, was their a difference? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

WHAT?! I CAN'T HEAR YOU! I WAS NEXT TO SOME A$$H@LE LAST WEEK THAT WAS SHOOTING AN AR THAT HAD A Y COMP ON IT!

Seriously, that brake is way loud. I've never noticed people that were using them to reduce the fierce recoil of the 5.56 actually got lower times than a flash hider. BSW

That didnt really help me at all. I was asking if anyone knew if there was a functional difference between the too, not if you thought they were too loud.

Well, chris, if you read BSW's post, it seems he was saying that one of them doesn't do anything worthwhile, and the other one works almost as well, and that both of them just make the gun loud.

Sorry, I wasn't being that subtle. I've only observed others using that Y and mini Y. I haven't used them myself. My brake experience is limited to the AK74 brake that's on my AK.

Good comparison here:

I sure don't need a muzzle brake on my 20" HBAR.

However, I imagine it might be a worthwhile accessory on a lightweight carbine. Recoil depends on the rifle, not just the round.:)

I have a 16" with a pencil barrel and its not the recoil that bothers me, I have a scope on it and it has enough muzzle rise that its hard for me to bring it back on target very quickly. Thats why I decided to get a brake.

+1 on the brake being for speed, not for recoil reduction, on an AR.

Haven't used the Bushmaster Y-Comp, but the Yankee Hill brake/comp combo I have on my AR definitely puts the rifle back on target faster.

+1000

What kind of AR? If it's a CAR, you might try a 9mm buffer instead of the break. A lot less obnoxious. But, I out the Y-Comp on a 20" match AR and it did reduce rise if not recoil. I do like it.
