My friend Jared, at last took the plunge and got a Bushmaster. It's the M4gery with the removable handle and pinned telestock. It looks sweet, and shot perfectly except for one thing.

Sweet MOSES, that thing is loud. That mini y comp was making his ears ring with plugs in. My brother was shooting his Ak and Mini14 right along side the Bushy and they were no way near that loud.

Now Iknow that the comp is the reason it's so loud. My question is are there any comps out there that are not so freaking loud. He want's to mantian the look of the M4, but really wants to quiet down his rifle to some what normal levels.

How hard would it be to remove the Mini Y and put another type comp on it?

This isn't something you want to try at home, although obviously if you have the skills and the tools it could be done. You need to talk to Kurt: http://www.kurtskustomfirearms.citymax.com/page/page/29585.htm

I believe he uses a lathe to take off the Mini-Y comp.

Kurt is widely known, and highly respected in the AR15 community for his muzzle brakes and his AR15 gunsmithing in general. If you post this same question on AR!5.com you will get the same answer, unanimously.

I agree with 444.

You will end up having to get something like the the "A3" type tac brake which will take up the 1.5" of barrel loss when you remove the Mini Y.

Taking off the Y comp is not that hard. Here is a link to another board that describes two methods. I have personally done the "split" method myself:

The A3 type would be a good choice to have something that looks right, as well as keeping you legal.

Edited to add that if you don't have the tools/know how to permanantly attach the new brake, you may want to go with the gunsmith route anyway.

Hi Guys,
I also just picked up an M4 from Bushmaster with the Mini Y Compensator. Is the Bushmaster 14.5" barrel threaded under that obnoxious thing?
And if I take it off and replace it with something else, what do I have to do to ensure it's still legal?
Thanks,
Slick
