Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone knows of any internal hammer revolvers besides the Smith and Wesson options (Models 40, 442, 642, 340, and 640). I believe Ruger's LCR is hammerless as well, though I like steel more. Any others (besides Taurus, no offense to Taurus fans)? I just want some different ideas as to what is available before I start looking seriously at them.

Also, not really interested in the shrouded hammer revolvers - call me what you will, but one less thing to go wrong/clean the better.

New charter arms and don't over look older non-lock taurus's. I have one of each . May taurus has a trigger that is the smoothest ever and is a 20+year old gun. May not buy a new Tuarus, i under stand.

That pretty much covers it. IMHO S&W is the way to go overall. Don't forget about the option of a bobbed hammer either. I still prefer hammerless but a bobbed hammer is nice too.

I like the Model 49/38 S&W Bodyguard. Best of both worlds. It has a shrouded hammer, but can still be cocked. It is just funny looking.

Thanks for the ideas, but now I have another question - how come S&W seems to dominate this revolver type, and why don't other manufacturers have several hammerless offerings? For example, why is there no Ruger SP101 Internal Hammer or a similar (lighter) non-polymer offering from Ruger?

The demand for revolvers is way down - particularly ccw revolvers. S&W already has the designs and the tooling so they fully amortized their production costs. Ruger and others would have to design a new gun from scratch, and set up the machinery. Given the sales number pale in comparison to small frame autos, there doesn't seem to be a lot of incentive to build a gun that makes up a small percentage of total sales.

Ruger is very sensitive to demand and profit ratio. If it doesn't sell well it typically doesn't last long in the catalog.

An internal hammer requires a different frame and action design, which doesn't work with the Ruger steel frame design.

Ruger does have the LCR though, which you mentioned in your first post.

Regarding demand, there must be enough to go around, because Smith tooled up their own polymer revolver.

I'm not a fan of the Taurus Ultralite series due to having a cracked frame on one I owned (Taurus replaced it with a new one, but I let it go.)

I did have a Taurus 650 CIA in 357 mag which had, pardon me for saying it, a pretty darn good trigger. Little heavy for pocket carry, but I probably shouldn't have let that one go.

Charter Arms is again making a very high quality revolver since the Ecker family is back with them. If you want one at a lower price I suggest buying soon because as they become more popular again the prices are steadily rising. On this page just click on any of the links that have DAO on them and you will see the revolvers you are looking for.

i like the J-FRAME

there is a reason the S&W J-frames are so popular. they are great guns. another upside of going with a 442/642 S&W is there are countless holster options out there for carry. also they come with a pretty reasonable price tag especially if you factor in the $50 rebate if you buy it before DEC 31st. good luck with your decision.
