Handgun Ammo Shortage?

Yea I used to think this was not a big issue...until the Walmart's around me were out, my regular online vendors are currently out of ammo too, seriously I agree!

I order online b/c none of the small, local gun shops have what I need (5.56 and .38 spl). Just rec'd a shipment of 2k x 5.56 and am expecting another 1k+ of .38 spl.

Stop the presses everyone! Breaking news! Ammunition is in higher demand these days than suppliers are tooled-up for!

All you have to do is find a place which has the dies and components in stock. I just looked for .380acp dies last night...I'm sure someone somewhere has them for sale, but it ain't Natchez, Midway, Graf, etc. Components (primers and such) for reloading have also gone up and are becoming as sold-out as ammo.
One thing that would help is if people would STOP ordering 1,000-5,000 rounds at a pop, then perhaps ammo could flow out to everyone. Let someone else have a few boxes also to shoot this month. Sure, everyone is in a panic....but WE have created an artificial shortage. The ammo companies, distributors, and politicians are laughing at us all the way to the bank. It's win-win for them....it's lose-lose for us.
I'm seriously considering selling off a lot of my centerfire hand guns, simply because it has steadily become more expensive and more of a hassle to get ammo and/or ammo components to shoot them than it is worth.

That is what they want you to do...

If you have a hard time finding dies, contact your local gun shop, they can get them from there distributors.

If you are looking for brass, put a add in the classified area for brass. There are people selling brass all over all the time.

Again, if you want ammo, order it like I do from my local gun shop, I get better prices and get what I need.

I've probably got 5,000 .38 Special cases alone.

My problem was that I need self-defense ammunition, and almost NOBODY had anything but FMJ, which I won't carry in my CCW guns. I tried for the better part of a month to buy some Hornady 200gr. TAP .45acps. After canceling two unfillable orders, I ended up buying 230gr. Speer Gold Dots from Graf's in Mexico, MO.

For practice, I've got AT LEAST a year's worth of reloading supplies.

I've looked at a couple of local shops in the last few days and the ammo is beginning to trickle in. One place had .45ACP, 38Spl, .223, 308, 9mm, and 40 cal. Last week they didn't have anything in any of those calibers. It was good to see. :) Hopefully it will be a continuing trend.

I Wonder

how much ammunition is bought by or on behalf of the narco trafficante Mexico drug guys? Sent back over the border or used to fund the gang/distribution activity in the US. With all the arms, this ammunition must be coming from where?

I saw the big raid last night on the idiot box and all the confiscated weaponry and it crossed my feeble mind. :scrutiny:

That is what they want you to do...
What who wants me to do? The ammo suppliers?
Or is it a conspiracy by the government remove my guns by having people freak out and buy cases upon cases of ammo in the past four months? ;)

Again, if you want ammo, order it like I do from my local gun shop, I get better prices and get what I need.
My local gun shop...Vance's....one of the largest shops in the state and one which supplies many LEO departments in central Ohio....has not had .380acp for weeks (.32acp also). The salesguys were laughing about it with me when I was in there last week.
If they can't get it themselves for their own stock, how would they order it for me any sooner? :)

jackstinson, yes the government. lol...

I don't have a problem getting ammo, but then again I reload for 90% of my guns.

The only factory ammo I buy is for my CCW. I have a case of 9mm, 40 S&W and 380 Auto.

There's a major shortage out here in Vegas too. Local wally worlds, Big 5, Sportsman's Warehouse, and most shops sell out of all handgun ammo the day they get a shipment in. Its crazy to see all the empty shelf space. It makes you want to buy more than you need when you actually find some.

I showed some restraint

My local WM actually had 12 boxes of 9mm Blazer Brass when I walked by the counter. I only bought 6 boxes:rolleyes: I left some for the next guy. I really wanted to clean them out, but then I remembered the last 6 times I tried to get some when they were out.

the reason why people are buying so much a wal mart and such instead of going online is that for 45 ammo, pmc gold, they sell it for 16.50 or so. weidners sells wolf for that much and then you have to pay shipping on it also. yeah the dude had to pay taxes and stuff but he has it in hand right now and does not have to wait. alot of the online houses are sold out on everything. weidners had south african 45 that lasted a short time but they are out now and it was the same price as walmart. you can still get wolf but of course it is not reloadable. hopefully, supplies will catch up when people stop hoarding as much, at least until the idiots we have running the country say or do something stupid.

Wally World had 9mm

My local Wal-Mart had 19 boxes Blazer Brass in 9mm. I bough 4 for me and 4 for a friend. Considering I have been looking in every Wal-Mart in the area I came across I thought I hit the jackpot. Friday turned out to be a good day.

Who'd YOU vote for?

All I gotta say is I hope nobody on this forum who's griping voted for anyone responsible for this situation.

I remember not that long ago, when I had some business trips to New York, I asked quite a few people if they'd voted for Hillary. I mean, I asked the cab drivers, hotel clerks, the business people I was meeting with - and I'll be damned if any ONE of them would admit :scrutiny: voting for her. Somebody did, though - where did all THOSE people go?

ammo is short here and there i think this has gotten past the point of a response it just isnt coming back in to the market place . is it really supply out pacing a high demand , or has there been a change. this is starting to impact me now. i dont know where this is going but i need some and cant get it.

Ok, why is it that ammo is flying off the shelves and ammo companies aren't making more to meet the demand. You know, the whole supply and demand thing?

Makes no sense why you have a product that everybody is buying and you are not wanting to make bunches of it to sell. Build it, and we will come :).

Just my .02,

companies can not just buy more machines to make more bullets. those machines cost hundreds of thousands of dollars for all the tooling and such. I am sure they would much rather run 24/7 with less machines then to make large purchases for things that might not be worth it if sales slow down. Better to have a shortage of supply for them because everyone will continue to buy the way they are instead of stuff sitting on the shelfs because everyone is stocked up.

I have never seen any commodity or item for sale in USA that has been rationed. THis looks to me like the depression in the 1930s. I see many gun stores saying that they will only sell 1000 rounds to a single customer. A 1000 round limit? Have you ever heard of a electronic stores saying they will only let you buy 1000 Blue Ray players or 1000 video games? You can only buy 1000 televisions? For those who think there is no ammo shortage, I think you are naive or just haven't been shopping lately.

I like to see Remington here in Arkansas increase thier capacity, production facility, expand new floor/space for workers and thier machines to make more bullets and guns faster.

But alas you can only grow so big. It's a image of a person too fat to maintain adequate oxygen flow in the blood from lungs to tippy toes.

It would take year or more to get the stuff settled to begin construction on expansion to Remington. Besides, there are bunkers out back of teh plant. No one moves whenever a red light is on over any one of them.

Just bought my first handgun today... a PT140, went to Sportsman's Warehouse for ammo, nothing... not a single box of 40. Went to Joes across the parking lot... one box of american eagle.
