Handgun Ammo Shortage?

I just stop by Wal-Mart whenever I pass one. Of about 5-6 stops over the last month or so, I found 45 ACP three times and 9mm twice (4 boxes one trip and only 2 boxes the second).

Nice thing is that they haven't yet raised their prices so when it is available its still reasonable.

not getting better

Now that spring is finally hitting us here in the Big sky country the gopher hunters are coming out and..... going back in, I was at several shops on the weekend and young guys come in looking for 22lr ammo and were told like most other places, "sorry, we are temporarily out". The places that have 22lr are getting around $30-$35 a brick for no frills Win. A local Walmart 'associate' told me to call in every morning by 7:30 and see what they had in stock, (gets stocked at night and they showed up 7:00), he then told me if they had what I wanted get in there by 8:00 cause everything would be gone not long after.

I know that the 5%-10% or so of average shooters were/ are hording. Probably 30% of average joe shooters are starting to see what's going on getting freaked. But still the majority of weekend warriors don't have a clue. Heard today that Hornady is having difficulty getting components and materials, lead copper/ brass/ primers.

Just some food for thought, (evil conspiracist that I am). Heard Sec. State hill. say that mejico's illicit gun problem is made up of 90% american weapons. also heard the atf correct that to say 7%. (sounds like 90% of traceable's are american, probably having legal owners here wanting their stolen pieces back!) Bho again just said last week that 90% were american? It sounds to me like they all want to pass legislation/ laws but know they couldn't get it through congress, at least now. I watch for osha, epa, and pre-existing treaties to put the crunch on like nothing we've ever seen yet. Osha tried declaring powder in the same category as tnt, but our us Rep caught that and squeeled on em and they rescinded it and pouted. epa and forest service have been wailing about lead contamination. and the treaty to which i speak of is the NNPT SA/LW. (nuc. non-prolif treaty and small arms/ light weapons.) the only one that concerns me is the SA- the rest is class 3 or govt. small arms defined therein are pistols/ revolvers, shotguns, rifles, etc. Willy amped up the treaty, george jr amped it up some more, now the money we're giving to the un has nearly doubled from last year. primary purpose is buying up military munitions and weapons that would regularly be sold after the conflict to other warring nations or unsafe organizations. I believe, (memory serving me, (sometimes)) in '07 we gave the un 27mill to buy up munitions, some of which would have come here, legally, and would be the mil-surp stuff we all love/hate so much but was dumped/ destroyed. The budget has almost doubled now and with the careless words by bho and entourage I anticipate a possible use of the treaty here. listen to his vernacular and compare to the documents, his words are carefully chosen. Just a what if right now, as far as i can tell, but it's definately on a few of their minds.

But alas, no matter. Live each day as it were your last, Love life, help your neighbor, and be courteous of others, (and let me have a box once in awhile, :) )

I actually found some .22 ammo while in a local gunshop this weekend picking up a Cav Arms lower I'd ordered on a group buy. They had a just opened box with bulk packed .22 inside and I pulled a box out on my way to the checkout. $23 for 525 rounds Remington "Golden Bullet". The checkout lady said the owner had driven to the West coast to pick the load up. I've not seen any other in town all spring.

I could have bought more I guess but I already have a couple of thousand rounds purchased over the years. I feel a bit sorry for those folks that just want to shoot some spring gophers (ground squirrels) and can't find ammo. I switched over to .17HMR for that task a couple of years ago.

That same shop had some 9mm, .45 ACP, and .40 a couple of weeks ago. I imagine supplies will catch up sometime this year and we can all start buying as we need it again...hopefully. :uhoh:

"The only reason I'm not picking up a new .45 is because I can't find ammo."

Me TOO! What's the point? I might as well save my money and buy it when I can actually enjoy it. Do you realize this is the most effective gun control that has ever happened? And its our own fault!

Man this shortage is getting out of hand! If you know any ammo horders please, please get them to calm down and stop being so greedy.

Last week I could have cleaned the shelve at my local Walmart of wwb 9mm fmj, but instead I bought 2 boxes and let others have the rest. That is the kind of restraint that will end this insanity.

Local Shop has Ammo.

I can almost always leave with some ammo when I visit the local outdoor supply store. They must have some great connections with Ammo manufacturers. I am usually buying 38 spl or .357 Magnum, even 22lr. The shelves look full most of the time. Some prices are lower than Wal-Mart. I buy it when I see it, so I'll have it when I need it.

The last time I looked, even Bass Pro Shop was empty. Wal-Mart, I've given up on finding ammo there. The best luck I've had was with Academy Sports, but the last time I was there all they had was Monarch. Not bad ammo, but I did notice some significant bullet setback this week in one of the leftover rounds. Scary.

Was at the north walmart this morning looking for a torque wrench (I know, stupid). Still no handgun ammo. Plenty of rifle. Even a couple boxes of .223 and 7.62.x39 surprisingly. Lots of shotgun and .22lr.

All this Winchester Whitebox that's missing from Walmarts is ending up on Gunbroker.

I guess some people have seen a business opportunity.

I noticed the ammo doesn't seem to be going for quite what it did the other day, because there is so much of everything listed on there now.

The ammo shortage is for real just about everywhere. I can still get 9mm and .45acp at the local indoor range I shoot at but there is a 2 box limit per caliber. These are usually AEs or Speer Lawmen, both good stuff, so I'm not forced to shoot garbage like Wolf (yet). I was at another local gunstore on Saturday, and the only .45acp ball ammo they had was some Aguila, and judging by the condition of the boxes, this stuff looked like it had be sitting around for about 10 years. I bought all they had, and the box that I shot was fine.

I have an open raincheck from Dick's for a case of .45acp UMCs, they are a PITA to deal with on ammo, but I'm buying just about all the factory ammo I can lay my hands on - skeeter_08

birmingham area walmarts are low. the one near me is wiped out of handgun ammo (save for one box of .40) but are still good sources of rifle and shotshell. guess i'm gonna have to start makin some longer trips.....

People here are talking about 500 to 1000 rounds of 9mm like that is stocking up. Makes me scratch my head. I go through 1000 rounds of 45ACP in 2-3 weeks if I am sipping it. Not unusual to shoot 400-500 rounds at a time. I often shoot that 2-3 times a week.
Folks, you gotta reload, cast bullets, and absolutely horde the primers and powder! If you want to shoot firearms as a mainline hobby, you have to make the necessary commitment to the sport. If you just want to stock up so you are ready to fight the gov't, all you really need is a magazine full because after you open the hostilities with a burst, your life expectancy will not be long enough to use up all that ammo in the basement.

Wow, that's a lot of shooting lawboy. I think I'll shoot more once I finally get a decent reloading setup going.

To the people who are still stocking up, (for what reason?) all I can say is, don't pay $50 for a box of 100rd .45acp WWB if you want the prices to come down. The $29 that Walmart charges is ridiculous enough. I used to pay $10 for this stuff back in 2004-2005.

Yea, I've never seen anyplace short of shotgun or rifle ammo. And .40S&W or .357Sig always seems to be the last handgun boxes to go.

folks calling for others to stop buying ammo so they can have some crack me up. They sound like the tree huggers and eco terrorists trying to make everyone live their lifestyle for their reasons. This is the US of A, right? Bigger, stronger, faster, more, right? Well, stop crying and go find yourself some ammo and when you do, buy all you can afford. If you cannot afford it, then get a new hobby or get a knife or some other weapon. But telling others to stop getting their fill so you can have some? unAmerican, in my opinion. And I say it with love for all. :)

Well Kansas City is now almost out of 9mm ammo. Walmart, Dicks, Sports Authorty, Cabelas, Bass Pro, my local pawn shop that always has 9mm ammo.

I have gotten into realoads but now I am having trouble finding primers and bullets. I did find some CorBon for 22 per 20 124 grain plus p. I bought all 8 boxes that I could afford.

From now on I will purchase my HD/SD rounds and cut back on my plinking. I THOUGHT 9mm was one of the most common rounds in the world. Well maybe, but not in Kansas City.

Prices need to go way UP. I'm not rich, but I have more money than time. I don't need or want cases of ammo...just a small supply equal to one or two trips to the range.

You sure don't believe in sharing when times are tough, do you? Nice guy, aren't you.

John, what do you expect ?

Let's say we lived in the same town and I go to Wal-mart multiple times a week, sometimes more than once the same day specifically to see if they have ammo. But I keep missing out and my personal stock is very low. But on my 27th trip I finally get lucky and catch them as they're stocking the shelves. But you'd expect me to NOT buy all I could afford, just in case you come bopping by because your wife dragged to the the store with her for the first time in 5 weeks?

If Wal-mart wants to limit me to 2-4 boxes, then fine, but don't expect me to leave any ammo for you because you might come in and want some.

That said, I'm surprised this ammo shortage has lasted so long in so many parts of the country.

.

There is no further profit in this thread. As folk find ammo - start a new thread here and post the details (where, how much, what kinds) for others to benefit.

Otherwise - we need to quit the endless bellyaching. It accomplishes nothing.
