Handgun as gift, across State lines

I am famililar with the law about selling a gun across State lines.

My question is: Do all guns that are transferred to another State (even a gun-friendly State), need to go through an FFL? Or are gifts between family members exempt? BTW, the handgun is registered in my name.

The only exception is for inheritence.
