I am starting to accumulate more and more Handguns. I have them in gunrugs stacked in a small safe. It is starting to get cramped:D . I have some talents with woodworking but don't know where to start trying to build a rack to hold them. I once saw some somewhere but really didn't like the design.

How do you have your handguns stored, what kind of rack do you have? Or do you know what I am even talking about? I've seen the wire rubber coated rack that holds pistols upside down but would rather build something if I can.. I would like pictures if possible.

Thanks

I have a couple of handgun racks which I purchased from Cabela's. They are vinyl coated metal racks and come in 4 and 6 gun configurations. I believe they cost $19.95 for the 4 gun model and 24.95 for the 6. Mine are made by Versatile Rack Company. Their website is: www.versatilegunrack.com

I use those clear plastic "file holders" that are about 5"tall and hold five/six guns each.Get them at Office Max/Depot or the like.Less than $5 each and don't retain moisture like wood could.

I'm starting to run into a handgun storage problem myself but here's a few pic's of my setup that may help give you some ideas.

I made the handgun rack, It took about two hours to build from two 4’ long x 4” wide boards.

It’s 28” wide and holds 14 evenly spaced handguns

For the handguns on the door I used a type of spool peg, I bought them years ago from an arts and crafts store, if I remember right, at the time they came in a little plastic bag with 12 or so per bag and they didn’t cost much but not long ago I went to buy a few more and they came in a little bag of 3 for $0.99.

They are screwed in and spaced for each handgun, I used washers behind some to space them out as needed with certain handguns and on a few I cut the lip of the spool off in some places to clear the front of the trigger guard, each handgun has to be lifted up from the muzzle then pulled out.
Some of the handguns have been on the door for 8 years and I have yet to have any problems with wear on the pistols or have any fall off, they fit very solid.

Need a storage solution myself. I'm proberly gonna go with the rubber coated racks. Just finishing up my new gunroom and already have run out of room for my rifles (bought a couple during construction) and the handgun shelf is full too.
Wish I had a way like those wooden spools to hang rifles on the walls.

The problem with storing handguns is that the dimensions vary a great deal between models, and allotting sufficient space on each position for large pistols wastes space when small pistols are stored. All pistols do have a barrel though, I store my pistols on shrink wrapped metal rods that can be rearranged on a grid of holes to allow spacing to fit the most in the space available. The metal rods are strong enough to hold any pistol through the barrel bore and the shrink wrap prevents contact.

NICE

NICE COLECTION, COOL IDEA, AWESOME SMITHS WHEELIES (MY FAVS)........BUT ALL CAN THINK ABOUT IS THAT 1ST. GENERATION G17 HANGING ON THE DOOR, LUCKY!

I use a Rubbermaid Binder Sorter - holds 6 handguns and I paid like $8 for them online. I use a nice soft piece of foam cut to fit on the shelf underneath the sorter.

Works great....I couldnt afford to spend $20 on a 4 gun rack.

Cool storge Gixerman

Looks like gixer needs another safe. As for you guys with multiple handguns, running out of storage, but can't afford a name brand or purpose built rack. What's up with that, you can afford multiple handguns but not a storage rack for them....ummmm, I'll have to call you out on that. Unless of course you inherited them all.

On Gixerman's rack, that is very nice. As a woodworker sort myself, I may have to take some safe measurements and offer a product of my own. What would be the preferred size? 6 guns is the minimum I would start with, or make 4 gun racks that modularize and stack together. However, those vinyl coated metal types look very nice and would never harm the finish on your favorite pistol.

With a wood rack, you could line it with felt to protect it, but over the years it may polish the finish a little bit where it sits in the rack. Would this be okay?

It's not that I can't afford a commercial handgun rack, it is I like to do woodwork and think I can make something customized and nice if I can get some ideas. I don't have a creative mind just carpenter skills. If I can see it I can build it.

Gixerman, your collection makes mine pale by comparison. Good On 'Ya, Mate! Absolute beauty of organization. Now on to another firearms vault.

I have an excellent, inexpensive rack. i went to Lowes and bought a vinyl coated, heavy wire, pot lid rack for about $10.00 . It comfortably holds 9 handguns - quick and easy. It's an idea I got from a gun forum.

My God, I think I just went into sugar shock from all the guns in that safe. WOW. I better start increasing my collection, I'm way behind.

I wish I could say this one was mine.
I am planning to furnish a safe in the same manner.

For the time being, a goodly number of my revolvers are suspended by the triggerguards on rubber coated cuphooks underneath shelves.
