i'm tired of the mess in my safe... handguns are laying flat, stacked on top of each other on a shelf in the safe, and i don't like the arrangement.

i've seen handgun storage racks which sit on the shelf, and then the guns are put on the rack upside down and stored side-by-side. i've been to a couple of gunshops and sporting goods stores looking for this, and can't find it anywhere.

any help here, or a better way to store them?

Mfr: VERSATILE RACK

Vinyl Coated To Protect Gun Finish

Provides space saving efficiency that makes best use of limited storage area. Tough, vinyl coated, steel framework offers a non-slip coating for extra security. Six and Four gun racks organize and store handguns in your gun safe or cabinet. Holds semi-autos and revolvers of any barrel length. Peg Board rack holds one handgun. Ideal to utilize that unused space on the door of your gunsafe. Includes mounting plate for non-drilled walls.

Go to any office supply store and get those plastic vertical file folder dividers. I've got two of them side-by-side in my safe and they do a very nice job.

Easiest way I can think of is to build a simple one.

Build an L shaped platform and set it at the back of the safe. Sticking out from this platform should be a row of wooden dowels that fit inside the barrel.
The dowel supports the gun by the barrel and stands them up straight.

You could also just search for gun display stands/racks on Google. I found several that would fit the bill.

What about the gun curtain (I am not sure if that is what it is called) that connects or attaches on the front door of the safe. It has little holsters sewn or attached on the curtain it hangs the length of the door maybe holding 15 or so pistols. Liberty gun safe company has this set up. I thought it was nice.

Gooseklr, that sounds great. I have a Liberty safe--going to have to check into that curtain for it. Same as Dakotasin, I am in dire need of organization for my handguns. Thanks!

The neatest and most space saving way to store handguns in a safe is in boxes. Robert's Arms Specialties in Harpers Ferry, WV, has cardboard pistol boxes of sizes to fit almost any gun. These are similar to the older factory boxes and stack neatly. They run $3.50 or so each, including labels tell what gun is in the box.

AFAIK, he has no web site, but the phone is 304-728-4472.

All my gun safe guns are in gun rugs. It's impossible to tell one from another at a glance, of course, but they're on shelves, and I've taped an index to the inside of the door to let me know what's on which shelf.

The problem, of course, is that guns reproduce.

Storage is always a concern in a safe. I have mine all in socks, except those that are used a great deal.... This link will show you the pocket holster door stoage system. It is very slick and works well on my Champion Safe. It fits around the inter door panel and you can get as many extra pocket holster as you feel you need on the door... Scroll down a bit and you will see the other holders they have available.

A less expensive option that is very similar to the "Versatile Rack" shown in RoyG's post, is to buy lid racks at a store where they sell kitchen racks for various kinds of pots, etc. Look for the display of white plastic covered heavy wire racks of various types (for drying dishes, hanging stuff, etc.). I think the ones that work best for handguns are "lid racks" or "pot lid racks" or something like that. I've seen a couple of brands, but not all stores that sell these types of racks will have the lid racks. I don't remember where I got mine, but I know I checked a few stores before I found them. I have several of these in my safe, and they work well. Each rack holds 8 handguns. I store mine upright, but they could also probably be stored upside down as shown in the Versatile Rack photo (the pot lid holders are very similar to the versatile rack design - but they only cost about $3 each. I store everything from very compact pocket semi-autos to full sized semi-autos and revolvers in them (the barrels just stick out farther on the larger handguns). I read about these on-line a couple of years ago on a forum like this.

Dr. Who, how did you find out about the ol'e hide the gun in the sock trick? I do the same and keep the sock moistened with Break Free. It's an old trick that I learned from my Father.

I keep mine is old white socks also. Once the sock has a small amount of oil in it wiping the finger prints off is just a matter of rubbing the sock when the gun is in the sock.

Also Clean97GTI could you give us a photo of your rack? Thanks

One safe for long bbl guns & another for h/guns. In latter I put shelves from top to bottom & carpet. Two h/guns pr shelf. Leave upper one for magazines & lower portion for small things I just want locked away, like the bolts out of the rifles.

Mind you it is compulsory for what they call "Safe Storage" so just two inexpensive safes & all guns with trigger locks (only way we can transport a h/gun to the range) along with both doors with dead-lock bolts & that is more "Safe Storare" then they have asked for.

Use metal cash boxes

If your safe is large enough, you can put each gun in a separate metal, lockable cash box. You can get them at WalMart for $10 each. They measure 7 x 6 1/2 inches, or you can get larger sizes. They will stack nicely, and you can lable them easily. Extra security, too.
