So I'm sittin' in the "thinkin' room" thumbing through the Jan/Feb issue of American Handgunner reading an interesting article on shot loads for handguns. The purpose stated in the article was for rattler defense, but I got to wondering if one could shoot clays with a handgun loaded with shot.

Would .45acp shot shells from a handgun have enough umph to take out clays?

Seems to me if it would work, it'd be a hoot. :D

Don't know about the .45 or, for that matter, the .44 with shot loads but I do know Thompson Center did develop a skeet round using the Contender pistol in .410. Always though it would be loads of fun to try.

Tried it with .44 Mag/Spl CCI Shotshells a few years ago. Taught me a bit of humility . . . You'd better be fast, because only way to hit them is right when they leave the launcher. Past 10 yards the shot is all over the place.

Shot shell loads in a rifled handgun spread like crazy. That makes them great for snakes at close range, but the pattern is generally pretty useless past 15 feet or so. Still, it's fun to toss Necco wafers in the air and pop them. I don't see why it wouldn't work on had tossed clays too, as long as they're not too far away.

The advantage that the T/C Contender .410 barrel had was a choke/spin eliminator that made for pretty fair patterns.

I have a T/C Encore pistol (AOW) in 28 gauge. I'll have to try shooting skeet with it one of these days. :D

wdlsguy,
28 gauge and you are right smart! :D

45 ACP and .44 "rat shot" work better than .38spl from handguns.

Just like shotguns, the pellets deform so fast, and especially since these pellets are small, #12 shot which will deform faster than #9 shot as used by skeet shooters.

.410 from a TC works real well.

I suggest low 7 , easier to hit, and lots of fun. One can duplicate low 7 with a portable clay thrower.

Do pattern these "rat shot" loadings, educational.

Oh, many of the 1911s I have used, bone stock, will cycle the .45ACP.
Real funny to take the doubles at station 7 with a Gov't Model of 1911.
What a hoot! :p

SM: also High Seven would be better maybe as the target is getting closer
and shot dispersion is not so great a factor...just a thought...

 why didn't I think of that.Does it hurt to shoot shotshells from a revolver?

Back in the day when I was a ranked AA (12 ga) skeet shooter, I shot a round with a .410 TC.

Broke 7 birds.

Seeing folks shoot at clay pigeons with a handgun(sort of a handgun) rattled the powers that were to banish the practice. I guess they couldn't stand seeing grown men having a good time.

I use my Sebru super shorty 20 gauge, run about 12-15 IMHO not bad!!!

Got to put some choke tubes in it when I get around to it but it is just a novelty for the guys who cannot understand why. I love to bust their ba!!$

JMusic from this site and myself were shooting baseballs and golfballs out of the air reliably with pistols just last month.

He was using his 1950 K22 with 6 inch barrel and I was using my K22 model 17-3 with 6 inch barrel. Both of these guns are 22lr. We were using standard velocity 22lr copperjacketed round nose.

Who to hell needs skeet/shotshell loads for ariels with pistols:D

Well...they sorta-kinda frowned on folks using pistols...
So we went to the rifle area with a portable clay thrower and tossing low 7- like birds, lower...we broke clays with shotgun slugs.

They said we could not do that...then how come the clays broke ? :D

Some people I swear...

I'll bet they frowned on pistol use sir.

Out here in the desert, I have 40 acres to use for ariels with a mountain range 1 mile away that climbs 7000 feet for a backstop.

What a hoot to have Jim show me how to shoot baseballs and golfballs out of the air. We played with my model 60 22lr rifle and did the same thing, pretty easy with the rifle due to my QK skills from 26 years ago and constant practice with the bbguns.

My .45 L.C. loads work on hand tossed birds out to 25 - 30';)

Load on right made from cylinder length cut .444 Marlin case
(Center load is my 2 .454 round ball load which prints 2-3" at 50')

Reminds me of my test of my new mossyberg. one of the short barrel/long mag versions. shooting hand chucked coke cans. full ones. fuuuuuuuuuun. the challenge was that I was chucking them myself, then shoulder, pump, and fire. Makes me want to get a batch of shotshells for the .44, now.

What if you have a guy use a slingshot to shoot some grapes down range and see if you can pick it off with a .22 shotshell? :D

why not buy a Judge- it shoots the 2 1/2 inch 410-you won't have to "load" shot in a metalic case. It shoot it well.
