Anybody have a Subaru Outback with a steel lock box in it for storing your handgun when traveling through non-reciprocal states or those areas where you have to leave your CC weapon behind?

There are a couple of nice pockets in the back end, and one nice storage area underneath the trunk space that I'm thinking of putting a steel box in.

Any suggestions on steel boxes? I've had cars broken into before and they always raid the glovebox. I'm interested in something a bit more secure than that for storing the weapon. How are the GunVaults? I've seen that those can be actually mounted in the car so that they are very difficult to remove. I'd rather my weapon not be stolen and end up on the street.

Any suggestions would be helpful!

Get a small gunvault (1000 model) or one of these for top access

I have both. The 401 is pretty cool and built like a tank. Gunvault I feel could be pried open if someone really tried. The 401 would take a bit more and it doesn't need batteries!

Gunvaults can be had for about $100 shipped on eBay. The 401 is double that.

You read my mind on the 401s GunSafe. I just saw that from a different thread (I don't like to put multiple questions into one thread, as I find that only one question gets answered) and think it will really work to fit my needs for in-car storage. Thanks!

Also, i agree about the batteries. What's held me back so far is I've only seen safes around that have battery powered access and a backup key. My problem is that I lose keys! :) Also, even it if is DC powered, what makes me think that the power will be on when I need access to the gun? I want something foolproof - mostly.

I have to leave my carry gun in the vehicle due to state law prohibiting CC in the building where I work. I drive a PU truck and I went with the cheap and easy. S&W M659 gets left with a steel cable through the trigger guard that is secured to the seat frame. I take the mag with me leaving the gun disabled.

If a car burglar brings the right tool he'll get it. The casual thief will not.

Surprised no one's mentioned http://www.center-of-mass.com/ which seems to be the usual default answer for cars many times. They're a nice steel case, and come with a steel cable which can loop around something sturdy (e.g. car-seat structure) and locks the ends into the box itself.

They are keyed entry, and you can purchase multiples keyed the same, so one key for multiple safes throughout the house, car, etc.
