I've got $500-750 for a handgun. I've been to the local pistol range trying out a few different handguns. What I'm looking for is a full size non-glockesque semiauto in 40s&w. Please don't start a caliber war. I just want to know some suggestions, preferable california legal ones...
Thanks

Have no idea what constitutes California legal.

But, I'll throw some things your way. CZ 75 is a good bet, as mentioned. EAA makes the "witness", a CZ knock-off. I think there are .40S&W 1911's out there now, I'm not sure if you'd go for the XD, being polymer and possibly "Glock-esque". S&W has been cranking out some semiauto offerings lately, I've got no idea what price range they fall into. Beretta makes a few full size handguns in .40.

I've shot the CZ-75, beretta, sig, taurus, glock (not my thing), and a kimber 1911 of some sort. The XD hasn't made the list, Basically I'm looking for some new ideas. I may just get the CZ, don't worry about the cal legal list if you don't know it, I can get used if it's worth it. These ideas are great. the $750 range is a max. I can't start skipping car payments to get guns, then it'd be an addiction:neener:

Can't go wrong with Sig. The problem with Sigs, is they tend to breed in the safe. Ya buy one, next thing, there's 4-5 there. :D

The sig I shot/rented didn't impress me over the cz, it was a nice gun. The beretta wasn't exciting, and it was about as accurate as a slingshot. I figure that all the rental guns I've used were all but shot out so I can't judge accuracy with them. I'll have to see what sigs there are at the local shop and what feels right in my hand.

When I get a 1911 it will be in .45acp I've recently read that the non-45 1911s can often have quite a few problems in feeding.

The main reasons I'm looking at 40S&W is that 9mm and .45 are old (yes reliable and proven) with a .45 you get stopping power, with a 9mm (already have one, want something else before a get another 9) you get mag capacity. The .40 is a compromise of both, and when I move from california, if my pistol can have laarger capacity mags that'd be a big plus.

P226 or P229 would be my choice and both would be used. CPOs come in good prices but I have purchased many used because they are easy to breakdown and parts are abundant.

You might also look at an FN or Browning Hi-Power in 40 S&W if you liked the CZ-75. The FNP from FN has impressed me, both from the ergos & triggers on the ones I've handled and the reviews I've read. I need to shoot one when I get back to the US.

As a side note, a 1911 in 10mm will convert to 40 S&W with just a bbl swap. Almost as good as shooting .38s most of the time in a .357 Mag revolver.

I went to the gun shop today before work. They are having a sell on the display models. This means some of the kimbers and paras fell into price range. The only other display guns they had marked down were glocks and an xd45 both not my thing. IF they were I'd get a new one but the fit isn't good for me and I like metal (steel prefered) guns, I don't care if they weigh more. I've never handled a para 1911 does anyone have any expirence with them, or the compact versions? I may just get a .45 before I get the .40S&W...These are at the local bigbox gun shop. They didn't want to order anything special and had no .40s&w anything but glock. If I get something in .40 I'll be going to the local mom and pop shop, probably go there anyway, just went to big box for cheap ammo and the sale.

Sig ? I'm not a fan of alloy frames, I just don't see them making the long haul.
I'd take a M1911A1 over a Sig any day, but that's just my opinion . :)
