I bought a .357 mag handi rifle on an auction (only because it had a Leupold VX2 3x9 scope mounted on it and was going too cheap- bought it for $210!)
The scope was all wrong for this little single shot .357 so off it came. I stuck a red dot on it and its a fun little plinker but the trigger is absolutely horrible! Is this something I could do myself with reasonable skills? Not a gunsmith by any means but pretty capable and not afraid to try something here.
Any suggestions?

Check and see if the hammer is forced further to the rear as the trigger is pulled.

If it is, the hammer notch is not cut to a near 90 degree angle to the direction of the sear movement.

So you are not only fighting the trigger spring weight, but the fully cocked hammer spring as well, cocking it further with the trigger pull before it releases.

The 'Fix' is to recut the hammer notch to nearly the same angle as the sear movement direction, so all you are fighting is the trigger spring weight + the friction of the smooth sear surface sliding over the smooth hammer notch.

Easier said then done though, without a sear & hammer jig to hold them in perfect alignment with the stone.

Don't try it 'free-hand' unless you have a lot of experience with stoning hammer notches perfectly square with the world.

RC, you might be on to something there. It is the worst trigger I have ever encountered and its like dragging something uphill vs a level creep ie increasing trigger pressure.
I found a good 2 part tutorial at perkloafm.com
A little more to the job than I expected but I think its within my capabilities.
Thanks

Use a super fine Arkansas stone and knock the burrs off the sear engagement areas, don't try to change angles unless you are experienced with trigger jobs. Add a little special grease like Brownells Action Magic and call it good. The pull might still be heavy but the grit will be gone. It is what it is, an economy rifle, warts and all.

"Perkloafm.com" has detailed instructions on doing a trigger job on these rifles. It's worth a look if you plan on doing the job yourself.

graybeard outdoors handi rifle forum has lots of tricks and instructions on how to accurize handi rifles--- check it out!
