Just wondering about interchanging barrels on New England Handi Rifles. My daughter has a 243 and I just bought a 30 30. I would like to put the 30 30 on the 243 reciever because it is a youth model. She will have one to bear hunt with and one to deer hunt with. I know I could just change the stock but wondering about the barrels. Would the headspacing be an issue?

When purchasing a new barrel, NEF requires that the receiver be returned to the factory to have the new barrel fitted.

Handi Rifles are not made to the tight specs of say, a Thompson Center Contender.

They need to be fit back at the factory.

However, it's still a killer deal. I've got 4, and several barrels a piece for them. A piece of advice, if I may - save up a few more paychecks and get several barrels fit when you send it. The Handi Rifle can have shotgun barrels fit to it as well. Get a .410 or a 20 gauge fit for it, you'll get a lot more usefulness out of it for hunting. The .223 or .22 Hornet is great on groundhogs, too.

Seems like I should be able to just check the head space. And switch it myself. I remember when H@R sold the barrels you could just order the barrels.

That's because the barrels came fitted when it left the factory - as a package . . . to fit that receiver.

Look, I've got four receivers with twice that many barrels for them. They do not interchange among my receivers. They only fit the receiver they were fit to. But hey, you do whatever you want to do. It's your rifle and your daughter.
