Handloading 7.62x39

I did this with 85 and 100 grain Hornady XTP. I did not load them super hot - about 2300 fps.

I was playing with a .313 bore Chinese SKS.

I loaded some with Speer 123 grain JHP bullets made for the SKS for hunting rounds and also some plated .310 RNFP bullets from X-Treme bullets. They shot OK out of my SKS's and AK but WHY when the loaded steel commie ammo is available for way less than I can buy just the Speer bullets to reload it with cost per unit. I got the stuff so I can reload in case the loaded surplus/cheapo ammo dries up for some reason. But it is not cost effective to reload unless all you shoot are the Win White Box or S&B premium ammo now.

One good reason to reload x39 is that the cheap ammo are steel bullets, even HP and SP. The S&B, Wolf, Tula, colored Bear :) are all bimetallic meaning copper coated steel. I suppose the premium hunting cartridges are lead core, but at $1.00-1.50 ea I can reload for far less.

Here are S&B "Soft points".

One other thing to throw into the mix is free bore. I pulled down a Hornady Z-Max today (123 gr?) and measured jump to the lands in my "new" Yugo. The bullet just barely hung in the case where it touched the lands. Huge jump. I'd be concerned with the XTP bullets that they'd clear the case neck before they even hit the lands.

the bores on all my 7.62x39s are tight enough that i never use anything larger than .311 been staying with .310s lately. used some of the bimetal when the guns were new but stay away from it now. wish sierra would make more keep running out of .311 bullets everywhere i look my old guns are getting hungry.
