forumsurfer, I did give that method some thought. I like the protection the holster provides to the gun when I stash it in the car. Also, I don't want even a hint of gun on me in those places where it's prohibited. If you live in New Jersey, it's a lovely state with the most unintelligent and bigoted attitude regarding RKBA of almost anyplace, except, of course, the City of Chicago. You have my sympathy.
Gotcha!
The social climate here is mostly pro-gun or pro-oblivious, So an empty holster rarely gets questioned if I'm searched entering a building. Occasionally, yes...there is always a bad apple in every tree. It usually goes:
"Why are you wearing a holster."
"Because the law says I can't wear my gun."
"Where is your gun?"
"In my car locked away, legally."
From there it is either a pointless conversation and an attempted lecture...an over all ___ing contest that neither of us can win....or he just growls and tells me to move along.
I could take my holster off and avoid such situations, but I'd rather argue with a jerk than adjust my pants and belt. I guess I'm getting old and cantankerous!
My kydex Raven quickly (as within the first week, quickly) wore through long strips of blueing off the top of my slide.
Honestly I believe the difference between the two to be negligible at best. Holster to holster type (not material) matters more IMO. But I have experienced more wear with my leather holsters that get used heavily in outdoor activities. I can't used closed bottom holsters or it just accumulates all sorts of junk.
I have a holster similar to the phantom made by a member here and it is hands down my favorite holster and the only style holster I've used that allows me to conceal a glock 19 OWB in summer attire.
I'm glad I finally quit worrying about holster wear long ago. I now find it adds character. If you practice running drills outside in varying weather conditions in a sandy area, they all get wear...leather or kydex. There's just too much drawing and presenting to not get wear eventually.
