What are the Pro's and Con's of refinishing a Rem 870 receiver in Hard Chrome? I was looking for something for marine environs and thought that hard chrome would do a fine job of protecting the receiver. I'm looking at a stainless barrel to go with it. Any thoughts? Yes, no, why bother?

Hard Chrome the whole thing, bolt, carrier, barrel etc. Hard chrome will go on over a coat of nickle, the nickle will do the lions' share of the corrosion protection, the hard chrome will eliminate wear and the need for lubrication. Hard Chrome is FAR more corrosion resistant than the best stainless steel. A matte HC finish is relatively inexpensive too.

I don't know how needed this is,since 870s with PM don't get very corroded even here in Moist Md, but....

An 870 completely hardchromed and with synthetic furniture could be chipped out of bedrock eons from now by an archeologist from another planet and species, have fresh ammo made for it, and kill said archealogist's dinner that day.

Talk about an immortal tool!

You might want to talk to Robar about doing this, they did offer a black chrome refinish a while back and still may...

I had an old 870 Mag hard chromed ( Metallife ) since mid eighties includeing the factory folding stock. It sure looks nasty!

You might consider boron carbide coating if you can find a place that will do it. The company that used to take knives in small batches doesn't do that anymore.
Anyway, its really tough, and corrosion resistant like the hard chrome but without the glare.

Boron carbide goes on over hard chrome if I am not mistaken, and black chrome is not hard chrome. It is softer. Call and talk to Scott at Accurate Plating and Weaponry. They do some amazing hard chrome.

Boron carbide over hard chrome?
I guess that might be.... only time I've really seen it done was on some knives over on bladeforums. They didn't say anything about hard chroming first. It was supposed to just be a 3-4 micron thick coating, you could still recognize whether the knife had a satin finish etc. before coating. Just turned it a darker gray tint. They would also bead blast everything before coating if you wanted.
