I recently mentioned this on the "Good Samaratan, CCW, takes out Bad Guy FL" Thread. I was at a Hardware store I frequent in my home town. This store has existed for many years (a family owned establishment), but just recently started selling guns and ammo. I was picking up some 9mm for my Beretta 92 when a portly man walked in and stepped up to the gun counter.

He said nothing even when the owner asked if he needed help. He just stared at him. It was simply "odd." That's what caught my attention. Then he just pulled out a black snubbie, finger on trigger, and began to raise it toward the owner behind the counter. It was surreal. I simply yelled "Oh, (expletive deleted)" and pulled my 92 from a strong side holster with a cant.

He could not have been more than 3 feet from me. He he went to turn to me and saw a gun muzzle at little too close, he dropped his gun on the counter. The owner unloaded it and called the police. I made him sit on the floor with his hands on his head until the police arrived, never pointing anywhere but at his face. When I saw the police cars through the glass doors I laid my gun on the counter.

I provided my CCW and DL. I was questioned extensively. One question I vivdly remember is where he drew his gun from. I remember this question because it was amazing that I honestly did not know. I spoke with the deputies for a while they handed my weapon back to me with the mag removed and the slide locked open. They apparently kept the one from the tube. I got in my car and just looked at the front of the store for what seems like forever thinking nothing and eventually drove home.

Good work! This is called making a difference.

And yet there are many people on this very board who would have done nothing.

Great job!. The press needs to make the public more aware of good deeds like this. It takes a certain type person to put himself into harms way, the store keeper is very lucky that type of person was there. Again, Mesinge2 a very brave action on your part.

Another fine example of a CCW holder who helped potentially save lives and the money of a small business. Had the police came at this point, you may even have had a hostage situation, or the guy could have simply killed all the witnesses before leaving the store. I assume he was unmasked and perhaps on video tape, this could have been very bad for you and the man behind the register. God bless you for your bravery and your good service to the country. I bet this scumbag will think twice before pulling off this scheme again.

Why did they keep one of your rounds? I'd get that back asap.
BTW good job.

Good job, what state was this in? In my home state, MN, you would have been arrested and then left to hire a lawyer to sort it all out.

Holy cow, amazing story. I'm glad everything worked out and nobody got hurt. Yikes.

Times are bad, people are getting desperate. There's no telling what his story is.

My impressions while reading your post.

He just stared at him. It was simply "odd." That's what caught my attention.
At this point, I'm thinking "well some people are kinda odd..."

Then he just pulled out a black snubbie,

Perhaps he's there to have it serviced?

finger on trigger,

Uh oh...

and began to raise it toward the owner behind the counter.

Yup, you did the right thing.

ThrottleJockey: While I don't necessarily disagree that one might be arrested, my take is that it really would depend on the assessment by the investigating officer and of the associated prosecuting / gov't attorney.

While MN law has well-defined guidelines for self-defense use, it also still has "the hot pursuit" law, which does provide for intervention.

What makes you say with certainty that such a use would lead to arrest here in MN?

Jim H.

Good job. The guy sounds like he might have been a bit off the beam. It's good that nobody got shot.

Good job. I am glad it ended with no physical harm to anyone.

As a note: SC does allow you to stand your ground and come to the defense of others in certain circumstances. This would fall under that law.

I don't care what's legal in my state. If someone was to attempt to hold up my local hardware store and I was carrying they sure wouldn't be getting away with it.

Bill the Police for that bullet or have em give it back. /teasing...

Good work!

Upon further thought, you think the police kept the bullet to get a fingerprint off to check you out?

I am not talking about the ethics of it, just the legal aspect. It would also indemnify you from any lawsuits that may arise.

Wow. Excellent report, and excellent work. It's exactly the way we hope such an encounter will go, should we ever be confronted with one; it's just too bad that they don't always go so easily, as witnessed by the mess in the Burger King in Florida a few days back.

Nice job, mesinge2.

Good work - but---I must ask. Were it me----I don't know that I would have delayed seeing him pull a gun-finger on trigger--pointed at the other guy.

Hesitation kills. So - what compelled you to wait - in this case it worked out well - but what what was your shoot/no-shoot decision point?

I'm not faulting you - I see this as an experience to learn from!

Hesitation as in *** is this guy doing in a gun shop raising a gun with finger on the trigger. More than like as not I would have stood there blanked out mentally wondering... Just like happened to me with my first actual problem on the job years ago when I was a newbie idiot with know nothing.

You think that man would have murdered the owner right there? The thing that bothers me is the odd look on man's face as he entered the join as written by the OP.

People get odd sometimes when they make a decision to do something they know is wrong.

Hungry Seagull, I thought about that but it has been quite a while and they have not contacted me. So, I let it go.
