Hardware stores

Where are you that people would do that?
My brother is like that. I tried to hand him a pocket knife I bought last year to see what he thought. I was fishing for gift ideas for his 50th birthday.

He wouldn't even handle it. Seriously, he was affraid of it. It's just a cutting tool for crying out loud. I mean a folding frame lock with a 3.5 inch blade is less frightening to me than an unskilled chef with a butcher knife.

It's a pocket knife, what's scary about that? "I just cut myself all the time when I handle pocket knives."

Seriously? How he's made it 49 years being this much of a sissy is beyond me.

Kinda sad.

A couple places around me have Case knives. One has a Benchmade display.

Cool to see them

Family, friend, co-workers, anybody asks, "do you have a knife?" My answer is, "I am a man, of course I have a knife."

I have 7 grandsons. Their 8th birthday, they received a pocketknife from me. Much to chagrin of D-i-L, who made her 4 put the knife in kitchen drawer, when I am around they CARRY their knife. In the barn, in the pasture, going fishing, you need a knife. None have ever cut themself, seriously.
Most of my knives are Case, Buck, Uncle Henry, Old Timer, Schrade.

Sander's Hardware in Lawton, is an old time hardware store. Est. 1925, HAS a gun counter, HAS knife displays, HAS knowledgeable employees and have stools around the counter for regular Bull sessions.

you guys have me wondering what the tree local Ace stores have.

Tractor supply has “good knives” in a glassed turning display kiosk and cheap knives in the bargin bins up by the registers. I bought an already cheap (for a reason) Red Chinese saw back machete from them for half price ( returned item) I still use six years out and bought cheap belt tool pocket knife sets for some of my church/scout boys as little graduation gifts. They were actually pretty popular with the boys.

when I was a boy those long thin folding fruit knives were popular with many adults of a certain economic and social class, say below average. They could slice fruit or peal an arm with equal ease!

I never understood those slashing pocket knife fights. The cry of “I’m gonna cut you, you fool!”
never made much sense to me.

Back to hardware store knives though, a friend’s dad would not sell a pocket knife to anyone drunk or angry. His store was closest to that part of town where fruit knives were most popular.

My old neighborhood hardware store has a few case knives on display, and the owner will order damn near anything you can find in his catalogs. I have known him for a little more than 30 years and he has always taken care of his customers, and beats the big guys on prices almost every time. He keeps the coffee pot on with fresh coffee, cold drinks in the antique coke machine, and a good story or two for the gossip hour.

The True Value down the road has a larger selection of knives, and he keeps a pile of overpriced ammo on the counter next to it. I don't think that many people give him repeat business though, his attitude is a bit "rough" and his prices are STEEP.

I have spent the last 20 years or so living and working in college towns. The fear these people have of EVERYTHING is incredible. My last 3 bosses would almost faint dead away if I pulled out a pocketknife to open a package "WHY are you carrying THAT?". They wanted me to use scissors like they all did.......

Wow. I live in a "college town", worked at the university, and nearby National Laboratory. Pocket clips on pockets are about as common as ... pockets. Gotta be the differences in the areas.

A tale of two division one universities: one where boots and pocket knives are the norm and the other where beads and Roman sandals (and polo shorts with boat shoes) are the norm. They are separated by less than 100 miles, both in Kansas. Both towns are definite college towns.

Reisners Hardware has a pretty nice case display. I ain't sure what town it's in. It's in a wide spot in the road between towns on us 62.

Folks, the topic is hardware stores and knives. Plenty of other threads to discuss other types of retailers. ;)

The local hardware store was a wonderful place. I remember knife displays for Case and maybe Imperial, but Dad found a pocket knife made by Henckels there that he carried for many years.

A hardware store in Crestview Fl has an epic knife counter and numerous displays heavily bias towards Case. Hall's hardware in Milton, Fl has a great selection too- lots of Case and even Winklers for sale.

When I was growing up the local grocery store had a small counter with fishing gear, knives, guns and ammo. The local hardware store had a small selection of knives but nothing as extensive.

Seems we've slipped into nostalgic musing now instead of where we still have hardware stores with good knife displays we might find quality knives still. Probably inevitable since the thread started with amazement at finding what was once the norm.

Anyone comes through London, Ohio, stop in at Dwyers hardware on Main Street. Established 1883. They are a very old fashioned hardware, and have a case knife display, along with some ammo. No guns though.

I've only been in once but there is a store called Harvey's Hardware in Land O Lakes, Florida. It's a Case Master Dealer. Half the store is kinda a Case Museum, all for sale. I'd probably go more but I'm not a huge Case fanatic. Have a few but never really carry them

I would love to find someplace within an hour of Minneapolis that has a good knife selection. I find if I can’t handle them, I don’t know what I want. Most of my favorites came from gun shows, but those are light on the ground lately. The outdoor stores have a few things but pretty small selection with an emphasis on one or two brands.

My local Ace had a Case case with a very sparse selection ten years ago, which eventually vanished to make more room for bait and worthless $1 trinkets like butane lighters shaped like a shotgun (?).
