I bought a nice little knife from Harvey King a couple of months back, and I bought it fully intending to use it in the field. This past weekend, I had the chance to do it, and the experience was great.
First, let me point out that Mr. King makes his own sheathes which was part of the appeal of buying from Mr. King to begin with. The sheath is what I think of as a Scandanavian type holster in that the knife sits low in a open leather sheath with no snaps or anything like that to keep it secure. I prefer this type of sheath because I think it makes the knife much easier to access with no real sacrifice to security.
The knife itself performed fantastically on a medium sized doe I shot. Edge retention with the D2 was fine, the knife was perfectly sized and comfortable to hold, and the micarta handles didn't get slick with blood and guts. It also served quite well when butchering.
Overall, it's a tool that I am proud to own, but even more proud to use. I understand that I could have done the same task with any number of knives, but honestly, the quality of the the knife and the fact that Mr. King is a craftsman and a nice guy to boot make it worth the extra money. By the way, this knife cost me $150.00, which I find to be very reasonable. In fact, I think it's a pure bargain given the fit and finish.
In any case, this knife is going to be my go-to hunting knife for many years and I am delighted to own and use it!
