S&W Model 22A
I bought a beautiful S&W Model 22A and ran about a thousand rounds through it before it decided to quit working. The gun is designed with some kind of nylon follower (which of course wore out) and when I replaced it with one of the new ones... the jams started. I shot it off and on for about another month and the rear slide refused to stay latched down... one shot, and the gun came apart. Getting it to stay together was impossible.
I called S&W's customer service yesterday, and they told me to send the pistol back to them and they will fix it... probably take about six weeks or so to turn it around, since the .22 factory is in Maine and they will have to ship it there.
Curiously, one of my "shooting buddies" had one exactly like it, and had exactly the same kind of problems with it. He shipped his back a couple of weeks ago.
Again, the guns themselves are beautiful... but they have what I would consider a pretty crappy design. I shoot S&W pistols all the time, and this is the first one that's actually given me any kind of trouble. I told them to treat it gently... it's the last present my wife gave me before she died from cancer, so it's got a lot of sentimental meaning to me. I just want it to work.
To S&W's credit, however, they are sending me a shipping label to send the gun to them, and once they fix it will ship it back. "We stand behind what we manufacture" was the comment that stuck with me... too few things you buy today have that kind of warranty. 'Til it gets back, I'll just have to keep pumping .22's downrange with my Walther P22... which is another great little gun. The only problem with it is I keep running out of ammo...
