Has anyone actually shot a Sig 556? Where are they?

Weren't they supposed to have shipped already?

What is going on? I still see the same articles online from the SHOT show. Doesn't anyone have one of these yet?

The word is that Sig is supposed to be shipping about 100 rifles at the end of the month. Most of these are going to be going to firearms journalists and writers, with a handful of them making there way to the general public.

El T, they are coming. You've been wrong repeatedly before. :) (as I do love to point out everytime one of these threads come up) :D

It takes time and effort to get a new product to market. I haven't seen Sig telling everybody that it would be out in two weeks every two weeks for the last year and a half. That was Robinson, and they even managed to get their gun into production. (and yes, they exist. I had one, wrote it up for SWAT, and sold it already)

Heck, I've been waiting for a Kel Tec PF9 for a magazine review since February. That's the nature of the beast. I'm waiting for one of the Oly bargain ARs for another article, and I'm going to have to wait a couple of months to get one.

Gun people can be incredibly impatient about new products. We announced our .308 Saiga magazines, and told everyone that it would take approximately two months. We were wrong and it actually took us four. (the first several hundred go in the mail this afternoon). So over the last couple of months I've had to listen to all sorts of anonymous internet posters making snide comments about vaporware. That can be kind of annoying when you've spent over 40 grand of your own money on a project, and some kid is giving you crap about how come they don't have their magazines yet.

Sig's a good company. And it is a nice slice of market share. It makes economic sense, they've done the beta work, they've felt out all of their dealers (I'm a Sig dealer), and their reps have been talking it up all over the place.

You postulated a couple of years ago that the ATF would not allow the XCR, PS90, or FS2000 to exist either. And if I recall correctly, those were pumas and unicorns too.

Sorry El T, love ya man, but I'm going to have to do this everytime you mention pumas or other imaginary creatures. :)

But why did Sig alter the appearance of the 556 so much? I thought it was going to be identical to the 550. And don't get me wrong, the 556 is a good looking rifle, but I think I can speak for a lot of gun owners when I say it would've been better to stick with the 550 appearance.

"Vaporware"!!! I love it. I have a new term.:D

XCRs, PS90s, FS2000s, yeah, I had to push all those aside to get to my ZIG556.:D You've been around the block like me, Cor. This is just more hype campaign feed by smooth-talking reps and public demand feed by the Errornet. Heck, vaporware pre-dates the Errornet by decades.

Have been in contact with both my Title I dealers and my NFA dealer, no dice on the XCRs (of course, the gun bidness is not about making money, just telling other people ""NO!"). If you can get me one, I pledge, as I have pledged before, to buy one from ya. If you can summon one from the parallel universe where vaporware exists, I will buy it and engave it with a unicorn, puma or badger, inter alia.

If they are coming, fine, put one in my paws. We've been burned to cinders by the gun industry before, we have every right to mock the campaign hype of the latest vaporware.:)

I agree 110%.

However, I think SIGARMS is just trying to tap into the mainly AR aftermarket parts and 1913 rail add-ons pools for folks to customize for themselves.

I was just at the SigArms Academy all last week taking a class. The instructors there said the 556 is still being prototyped. They had a big SigForum shoot there today and they just laughed when I asked if they'd have any 556's for the forum members to shoot.

I did hear them testing what I was told was a 556 on another range. They had a "General from Lebanon" out there and were demoing a bunch of weapons for him.

Btw, the reason the 556 has beeen "AR icesed" is because the AR/M4 setup is THE standard for LEO and military sales. That's where the big money is and that's the market Sig is really going for with the 556 series. They'll be happy to sell "range toys" to civvies as well, but would prefer larger contracts. I expect we'll probably see a more "traditional" version eventually, if they can justify the production costs.

Trebor, the cops have always been able to buy genuine 55x rifles. The DEA and FBI bought a truckload a while back. No, the 556 is being marketed straight at the civilian market. I guess their research showed that a rifle without rails and M16 magazine compatibility would not sell. Maybe they're right, because I don't think the rest of the world has caught on to the flexibility of rail systems.

That XCR is so darn elusive and yet I some how managed to capture two.

Why can't I win the lotto?

I give Sig credit for not saying two weeks every two weeks. Hopefully they are using the extra time to move the magazine release button closer to grip and improving the bolt release. Other than that, I liked the SIG 556 I held at the NRA convention and would definetely consider trading a few of my AR's for one.

I believe Swiss Arms, the mfg of the 550,551,552, would not allow SIGARMS to make an exact copy of the original 55X series. They are two different companies, hence the longer lead times in getting this gun to the market, not to mention the alloy lower having to be designed from scratch.

Loaded!!!

You have a new nickname here: The Unicorn Hunter!

Tell me where you got them, please, please, please. I'll be your friend, I'll rake your leaves, I'll clean your guns--where?!?!

The first one I ordered (pre-ordered) via a local dealer. The second one I got on Gun Broker from Jensen Arms. They are a great outfit to deal with. The whole transaction took less than a week. The price was less than I paid locally even with shipping and transfer figured in.

They have one listed on Gunbroker right now Auction # 60808595

Sig's head marketing person for the 556 at corporate HQs told me today that there was no chance I'd have a 556 by my tactical match on the 10th. All that means is that none will ship before 12/4 (the date it would need to ship by to get to me by the 10th). If late fall is the new shipping update on the web site and that ends 12/21 yet none will ship in the next week or so, we can pretty much narrow the initial ship date to between Monday, December 11th and Thursday December 21st. Depending on location, dealers will get the gun 1 to 6 days after Sig starts shipping from Exeter, NH:

So best/ earliest shipping scenario: some dealers / customers in NH, VT, ME, RI & CT start seeing 556s by Tuesday, December 12th. Latest shipping scenario: folks in HI & parts of OR & ID won't see guns before January 2nd.

El T, I'm sure you can pick an XCR and they will have it to you by next week:

I'll be real surprised if we see a 556 before SHOT. I trust SIG more than I trust RA as a company though. Even though the XCRs are out there, the owners don't seem to talk about them much, and I just can't seem to get warm and fuzzy about RA without a lot of positive end user reviews. My VEPR was a great rifle, but my buddy's M96 (RA designed and built), not so much. A 556, I'd be a lot more likely to buy without huge positive feedback, although, with the GSR and Mosquito being in recent memory, I probably won't do that either. Eventually I will be in the market for one or more of the new crop of rifles though, whenever my current AR milspec-ish builds get finished.

I've fallen in love with the 550. Mesa want 550, not extruded cow-doo-doo that is known as the 556. Why must our laws be so stupid?

Why must our laws be so stupid?
Because the opposite of "pro" is "con", and the opposite of "progress" would then be......:banghead:

More reasons than anyone can count.

If I ever even see a 556 in person, I'll be happy. But, given how long it's taking to produce ANY, I could have gotten a PhD or two by the time that happens.

If you can make it to St. Louis next April I am sure Sig will have some there. They had a few samples at the Milwaukee show. I was impressed with the balance and build quality but thought the egronomics were a step back from the AR. I am not talking about the AK style charging handle either. The mag release is too far forward and the travel of the bolt release is more up than in. I would love to get the SWAT version and mount some diopter sights on it however.

The kicker is that the company isn't selling them for the ebay price... the first buyers are. And the first buyers bought them for normal retail.

All the hype in the world isn't doing them any good if they aren't selling rifles.

It sure isn't doing Sony any good either. The PS3 launch has been deemed a failure compared to that of the much less anticipated Nintendo Wii, and they are way short on the number of units they intended to sell by this time.

Guys, it sounds like Sig will put out a limited supply initially (dealers samples, etc) and wait to mass poduce, so what is a realistic time that there will be enough 556s to go around to the little people ?

You'll undoubtedly be able to buy one on Gunbroker once they start shipping, but then you're going to pay an outrageous amount. So the real question is how long until you can find one for somewhere vaguely near its real value. And that's probably going to be a while.

So, is anyone else hearing April now, if ever?

I think someone here is owed an apology.:D :neener: I shall accept said apology in the form of ten (10) XCRs.:)

Here are some photos of local pumas readying for their purchase of ZIG 556s: http://www.oceanlight.com/lightbox.php?sp=Puma_concolor

Here are photos of European bears preparing to dance with pumas when the ZIG ZAUER 556 hits my local gun shop: http://www.bulgariaski.com/bansko/pages/dancing_bears_park_en.html

Joke of the day: what's the difference between a bear and puma and a ZIGZAUER556?

If you prepay for a bear or puma, they will actually be delivered!:D
