I wouldn't say it's all bad since I've only shot one kind, but I didn't like that load at all. It was .38 Spl. lead roundnose, and it gave off smoke that rivaled black powder and covered my revolver in grey soot.
Ditto... Shot some of the .223, too. Cheap stuff for plinking. Probably never buy it again since I'm getting into reloading... I didn't have any quality issues, just dirty as he!!
I actually put 200 rounds of .38 special down-range one time at a local indoor range, and after that trip I vowed to never shoot that stuff indoors again.
Before I started reloading, I used to shoot quite a bit of .45ACP, S&W40 and 38spl. Cabelas bulk ammo is Ultramax and it was relatively cheap. It is a little dirty, but you clean your guns anyway, right? The brass is reloadable and I liked the S&W40 loads, they were less snappy than Win.
Shot some in 223 prior to reloading for that caliber. Was reasonably accurate, but as others have noted, it was dirty. Have also read horror stories of an AR action that was destroyed.
I got a value-pack of .45 ACP awhile back, and out of 150 rounds, I had 2-3 rounds that had noticeable bullet setback (which can be VERY bad if fired) and two rounds that had very light powder charges. I still have another value-pack in my ammo locker, but I'll be investing in a bullet puller shortly so I can reclaim the bullets and brass rather than shoot them.
I'd stay away - they're not any cheaper than other brands, and the quality control (and quality in general) is pretty crappy.
The only UltraMax I've ever shot were .38Spls. They were without a doubt the dirtiest rounds I've ever fired. When I got done with 100 rounds, both my gun and me needed a bath. Now I know why the bathroom sink at my range has that really-big dispenser of the hand soap with the grit in it. I got cleaned up there, and my S&W snubby got a thorough cleaning once I got home. They all went "bang", but I knew then and there that I would never buy that ammo again.
I have shot both their pistol and rifle ammunition. The rifle rounds seem to be okay, but I'll never purchase their pistol rounds again. Some were out of spec or damaged and some failed to fire.
Besides the excessive smoke I don't mind it. Actually I just bought a value pack of .223 from Dicks yesterday. I had a $20 rewards check so I got 130 rounds for 19 bucks...Not too bad. But the 9mm and .45 aren't worth it anymore because they used to cost $35, but went up to $45.
My buddy will never buy it because it doesn't fire right in his Cx4, but I have never had a single issue with it.
I've bought a few hundred rounds of their 9mm. I wouldn't be buying that crap again. It felt like every magazine I went through, there wasn't enough powder to cycle the slide. I just stick to WWB since I've never had a problem with it.
