Has anyone ever used HP or SWC in a C&B?

I'll repeat the question here for clarity: Have you ever used a hollow point or semi-wadcutter bullet in a cap and ball revolver? I'd like to know what your experience was. If you have experimented with these bullets, who made you the mold? Did you see an improvement in velocity or accuracy? Did the hollow points expand?

NOTE: I'm talking about lead bullets in the stock black powder cylinder, NOT cartridge bullets used in conversion cylinders.

Ive shot quite a few JHP's in the Rugers. I don't really shoot for accuracy but I can say they did a pretty good job of blowing up pumpkins and oranges.

I was thinking more along the lines of lead bullets and not with the conversion cylinders.

I believe the Kaido conicals of popularity now are of SWC design.

Popular with pards who want to hunt with C&Bs.

I cast SWCs (.452 Lee mold) out of pure lead for my ROA. I shot a small buck with it and it penetrated both lungs and the deer piled up 50 yards away. I have no idea if it expanded but it worked.

I've heard of people trying SWCs cast in soft lead. Never bothered with it myself, you can't use them for International competition and round balls shoot perfectly well.

I meant I've shot JHP's with the original cylinders. They shoot the same as anything else. Ive also shot a lOT of the standard truncated cone ( SWC ) .454" lead Hornady 255 grain bullets both in the Rugers and in the 1858. 900-1000 FPS out of those and you know you fired it. Shoot a little low but plenty of unph and as accurate as I care about.

I have use Hornady's swaged lead HBWC .358" bullets in my Ruger .36 caliber "Old Navy" :what: :D with accurate results at 25 & 50 yards, using 17 grains of GOEX 4FG & C.O.W. filler.

It requires the use of a cylinder press so as not to deform the lead wadcutter bullets.

Its just easier to load & shoot Hornady .360RB or .375 RB with 15 grains of GOEX 4FG & filler.

Seems every man who gets a cap and ball sixgun immediately thinks of endless ways to shoot bigger boolits out of them. Once he quits thinkin' and starts shootin', he'll invariably settle for the venerable round ball for almost all of his needs. Just as his ancestors did.

I was no different!

This is 80% of what I shoot out of mine 28 years after buying my first 1858. They work quite well with no drawbacks.

Yep, been there done that, and having numerous weight and style molds for 45 caliber made it even worse.:D
