Has anyone fired the new S&W M&P-22 Compact?

I wasn't interested at all,,,
Until I read that they were USA made.

I have a small windfall of cash,,,
And a co-ed who needs a graduation present,,,
Besides, I'm always on the lookout for my next .22 pistol.

So, if anyone out there has handled one,,,
I would like to read what you have to say about it.

S&W M&P Compact .22

I got one and I'm lovin it! I've had the Walther P22 and the Ruger SR22 and just wasn't thrilled with either. The S&W is the hot setup - nice trigger, excellent sights, ample grip size, very reliable, accurate, easy to field strip. It's not a target gun, but I think it is the best thing that's come along for a "kit gun" type thing to carry outdoors.

Like the feel of it, trigger is ok. Was really hoping the 12 round mags from the full size would work in it, but they don't. Does come with two mags which is nice. No better or worse in quality compared to the full size which I traded in for the compact.

Cheap gun, cheap fun. I like the grip and adjustable sights. I haven't tried it with a can on it yet, but it seemed to get through subsonic ammo just fine.

How does the action operate?

Thanks for your replies,,,
I do have a couple of specific questions.

Enlighten me about the action please,,,
I'm at sea as to how it operates.

The S&W Website says it is,,,
"Single Action (Internal Hammer)".

It doesn't say anything about a decocker,,,
So I assume there isn't one.

So when you chamber the first round that cocks the internal hammer,,,
With an internal hammer how would you un-cock the pistol?

It seems to me that you now would only have one of three options:
  • Drop the magazine and then eject the chambered round.
  • Engage the manual safety so it's cocked and locked.
  • Fire the pistol until it's empty.

Does he slide lock open after the last round?

I know those questions might seem a bit elementary,,,
But the website says nothing about these things.

Thanks Gentlemen,,,

Its a blowback operated pistol w/ fixed barrel. The slide will lock back on the last round. It comes apart sort of like an M&P and sort of like a PPK. You lock the slide back, turn the takedown lever down, then pull the slide up and off the frame and then the guide rod assembly lifts out of the frame as well.

As for releasing a cocked hammer, yeah, that's sort of an issue as it's not a good idea to repeatedly dry fire a rimfire. I use a .22 dummy round to drop the hammer on just to be safe. Problem is the firing pin makes short work of them. I know a few people who use an empty .22 case to put in the chamber and act as a buffer for the firing pin.

A #4 plastic drywall anchor works very well as a snap cap. About $4 a hundred at the big box stores. After I'm done shooting my full sized M&P22 I unload and check clear, drop in a wall anchor, pull the trigger and put it away.
