I am in the process of relocating from FL (Jacksonville) to Chesapeake VA.

I am just wondering if anyone else, having done the same, has any advice on the process- I haven't even started yet, but my FL residency is up as of September, so I have to get to it soon.

Thanks!

There's no need to give up your FL CWL. I can't see anything in the statue that says you have to do anything except notify the division of licensing within 30 days of your change of address. You can do that online.

When you renew, the non-resident charges are a little higher because you have to pay for a new fingerprint card and background check every time. (Thanks, Florida.)

I think the only thing you need to worry about is getting a VA resident license at your leisure once you've moved. The FL one will still be valid as far as FL is concerned.

Since you're new to VA, familiarize yourself (and bookmark!) VCDL's site.
Lot's of good info from one of the best / most active organizations I've run across.

I think they have a pretty large / active group in the Tidewater area.

Thanks guys- I just wanted to switch it over to VA rather than going FL non Resident when I change my DL, so everything matches.

Thanks for the link, Blur!

Your certificate of completion from whatever course you took to get your FL permit will do just fine to qualify you for a VA permit. You'll need to fill out an application and present the application and your certificate of completion at the courthouse. There is some info on their website.

Thanks- I was just wondering if having a reciprocal permit might make things easier (or more complicated)?

Buy 'The Virginia Gun Owner's Guide' and read it.

Virginia has NO statute law covering lethal force.

NONE.

It is ALL case (common) law.

Even for the police.

Haven't you been in VA for a while anyway Ramone? I'm pretty sure I've met you before.

Well, the last six years or so, I've lived on boats ( I am a Yacht Captain), and maintained legal residence in NY, VA, and FL (and RI for about 8 months in there). I spent 3-5 months in each state as the boat moved around.

At one point, my DL was from NY, my cars were registered in VA, and my motorcycles were registered in FL.

I dialed that back to VA & FL, planning on Making FL my residence (no state income tax), but changes in circumstance have left me considering VA a better choice for 'home', so I am giving up my FL apartment, and moving all my documentation here to VA.

yanno how someone on the phone will ask you for your zipcode to verify your identity? for me, that's a tough question.
