The Huffington Post bloviates gleefully that Sen. Reid has "signaled" that he's "willing to discuss" new gun control... this is what he actually said:

"I believe part of that healing process will require Congress to examine what can be done to prevent more tragedies like the ones in Newtown, Conn.; Aurora, Colo.; Oak Creek, Wis.; and Portland, Ore.," Reid said, referring to other recent mass slayings.

"As President Obama said last night, no one law can erase evil. No policy can prevent a determined madman from committing a senseless act of violence," he said. "But we need to accept the reality that we are not doing enough to protect our citizens.

"In the coming days and weeks, we will engage in a meaningful conversation and thoughtful debate about how to change laws and culture that allow violence to grow," Reid said. "We have no greater responsibility than keeping our most vulnerable and most precious resource --our children -- safe. And every idea should be on the table as we discuss how best to do just that."

Obviously, he has to say something... and obviously he can't say he won't even listen to talk of gun control. He's also either quietly pro-2A or at least smart enough to know how badly gun control has hurt his party. But this was such a vague statement, with promises to "discuss" and look at "all" the possible causes... combined with his reference to the president suggesting no law would prevent this... and later suggesting anything the Senate does would die in the House anyway...
Ladies and gentlemen, I could be wrong, I think maybe the Senate majority leader has quietly conceded to us and gently broken it to Fienstien & friends that not much will come of this legislatively on his watch.

It appears that the NRA and pro-2A legislators' response of solemn quiet has been a sound one. Now might be the time to write our legislators and tell them respectfully and without rancor exactly what we need them to say and do... nothing. Nothing at all.

Sen. Reid has been around.......

.......long enough to remember what happened last time. Also a lot of firearm owners in his state, he doesn't want to piss off his cash cow. Still don't want him to cover my back.

I don't see any concession to specific measures in there at all. More like a "I'll see what we can do about that" as a polite way of saying no.

I agree that I don't see this as Reid caving in any fashion whatsoever. But, if he does end up caving, you'll know that he plans to retire after the end of his term. He won't go up against the NRA if he's planning on running again.

Reid will only concede when he is dead!! I've know Reid since he was a failed lawyer.....40 years. He is a master SNAKE. ASSUME NOTHING!!! He is vile, viscous and unprincipled! Want to know how I really feel????

Best.

At night I dream of a random piano falling on Harry Reid. But I can't say he has ever waivered on gun rights. If he caves NOW, it doesn't matter if he runs again, NV will lose that senate seat. What they have been saying about him for years will have turned out to be true. I really think he is hoping he never has to make the decision.

Sorry to disagree. Nevada has turned BLUE because of the S.E.I.U. and the other unions along with the changed "demographics". Nevada used to be Red, but southern Nevada has the overwhelming population power turning it blue. To my EXTREME dismay. He could sponsor the total repeal of the Bill Of Rights and still be reelected! Trust my on this! Please!

Best.

meaningful conversation and thoughtful debate

There it is again...the drumbeat of "consensus" legislation :barf:

Mark every time you hear at least two of those words from a pol or reporter over the next week. You'll be suprised how much our independent journalists sound exactly like the politicians they hold accountable.
