Has the price of .223 gone up??

I just go the new CheaperThanDirt catalog in the mail and am I right in seeing that the price of .223 has gone up??

I've been thinking about changing over to an AR from an AK and have purchased a Stag lower for a build but based on ammo cost I might be better sticking with the AK and making some modifications to it to improve the sights.

Big time. There have been 3 or 4 price increases on ALL ammo in the last year. Thank the Chinese, and their voracious appetite for all raw materials. And maybe that Iraq thing.

Well, like I said I've been shooting 7.62x39 which hasn't gone up that much and it looks like I can still get 1000 rds for under $200.00.

All the .223 in my local area has doubled in the last month or so. I guess it's time to start reloading.

I remember about 4 years ago being tickled to pick up a case (1000rds) of 7.62x39 at J&G for ~$78. Early this year I was tickled to get 500rds of RG 5.56 at J&G for ~$90.

Now all the good 5.56 is gone and the price for Wolf 7.62x39 or 5.56x45 is around $200/1000rds.

I'm not even 30 and I feel like an old man wishing for the good old days.

Try being a 7.62 NATO shooter.:banghead:

4 years ago I used to order 7.62 AK from Centerfire Systems for $85/k. Delivered to my door it was $89. That's my benchmark for AK prices. I bought AR at Knob Creek for $120/k as well as 7.62 NATO (and not Indian or Pakistani). Ahh, the good old days.

When the surplus ammo supply starts to run thin the prices naturally go up. Add to that scrap Cu and brass prices doubling and tripling in that same period and you have the inevitable price increase for ammo that we see today.

It's making me rethink my decision to build an AR and dump my Saiga. I have limited funds and I already have about 1500 rds of 7.62x39.

The Saiga was my cheap SHTF rifle. But after shooting it a number of times I'm not liking the sights. That plus seeing all the stuff that's available for an AR got me thinking it was time to upgrade to a more modern design.

I'm a self proclaimed AR hater. Now, I'll never get rid of it because it's got great balance, is accurate, good eronomics, etc. Everyone should have one and I'm probably going to get another. But I still hate 'em.
