As an owner of Leupold, Zeiss and Vortex scopes (among others) I prefer Zeiss Conquest over Leupold, both for the glass and the reticle choices. Vortex is a good value as well, and I was quite impressed with the Viper 3-9x40mm scope with the BDC reticle that I bought for a friend. I used that scope to work up a hunting load for her rifle. You could probably find the 4-12x40mm model for around $450 or less but personally I'd stay with the 3-9x40mm for all around use.
