Have Ruger 10/22's ever been employed by any Law Enforcement/Military units?

I was just now thinking to myself that if the military was to ever adopt a .22 caliber rifle it would probably be a 10/22 variant. Which got me wondering if 10/22's were ever employed as a tactical weapon in an official context.

I have always been a 10/22 fan and just wanted to know if there is some fleet of Police cruisers outfitted with suppressed 10/22 Tacticals out there, or somethin like that?

They're definitely very handy, light, reliable, versatile and accurate weapons so I guess I'm just sayin I wouldn't be surprised. Just a thought

@OBG, thanks, that's the most interesting thing I've heard about Ruger 10/22's all day, although I would probably never mistake the 10/22 for a non lethal means of riot control. Interesting

That Israeli "hush puppy" is one interesting weapon. The SRT for my department occasionally used a suppressed MP5 in 9mm for dog problems. In our portion of south Florida it was common for dopers to keep pitbulls and other problem dogs between them and anyone that might be after them (if they were lucky it was us and not the competition). Nothing to do about it if the dog was inside a structure - the entry man had to deal with the animal at pointblank range with whatever he/she was armed with... Dogs in fenced yards or compounds were another matter entirely...

Since most of the team members were dog owners themselves, killing someone's dog was not something they ever did unless it was a real necessity.... That fully suppressed little 22 would have been very useful.

I've seen NOPD on the show Cops using suppressed 10/22's on nutra rat in the canal system.

I've never seen a semi auto .22 of any variety that I would trust to go bang enough to use in a defensive capacity, even getting past the caliber arguments.

I read they stopped using it because of that reason. It turned out to be a good bit more leathal than originally thought.

I suspect those "lethal strikes" weren't accidental... I'd be hard pressed to be a strictly leg shooter while being pelted with rocks and other items that were being used with bad intentions.... Thank heavens I was never placed in that situation as a cop...

I seem to remember that a certain Southern law enforcement agency had a few suppressed 10/22's that were used for canine control on warrant service, and were also occassionally used to take out streetlights and porch lights just before the team went in.

Dunno about the 10/22 but I remember when I was a kid back in the early 70's and there was a show that demonstrated a 22 caliber ultra-high capacity full auto rifle that literally cut a car door in half, length-wise. Going back to the 10/22, aside from suppressed usage to quell dogs, the other use I see for a 10/22 is suppression fire.

Onward, I remember thosr things. The had a drum magazine feed and featurea a lazer sight that cost more than the gun.

Yup, I think we saw the same show or news clip. I remember the huge brick looking laser thing strapped below the barrel. It also had what I think was a drum, but man did it have capacity. It for sure held more than a 100 round 10/22 drum because it was on full auto for what seemed like 30 seconds. The car door was cut open horizontally! As a 9 YO kid, I remember thinking to myself that I wanted one! :D

I seem to have a old military manuel laying around somewhere on how to use the 1022 as a selective fire assault rifle for special forces use, im pretty sure it was for the US special forces to use as a selec fire suppressed weapon in vietnam but im not 100% on that

GunnerBoy,

Now that's something! Any more details on that? I've always thought 10/22s were handy for almost everything, but I never would have expanded 'everything' to include special forces!

Not to be pedantic, but the current military rifle IS a 22 caliber weapon.

I have torn apart everthing looking for that manuel and im gonna assume that when i moved a friend probably found it and decided that he needed a manuel on how to turn a 1022 into a selective fire assault rifle, that or gremlins have it one of the 2 but google it and see if you can find out anymore info about what i was saying.

God forbid they take the time to call the utilities and have them just, you know, turn off the light. Much more tacticool to shoot out a street light, I guess.

Back in the 1970s we used 22 rifles for critter control. Carried in the trunk of our police cars. Mostly Remington Nylon 66's though. There is evidence of suppressed Nylon 66s being used in Viet Nam to take out sentries and such.

Any manual you see about converting the 10/22 to full auto is civilian, survivalist/militia in nature and not military. They were military looking and were common in the 1980's.

One of the problems of Israel's use of the 10/22 was the practice of shooting people in the groin. The femoral artery is located close to the surface on the inside of the leg near the groin and it is easy to hit. When Palestinians complained about their rock chucking children dieing from that practice, an Israeli Colonel's famous response was that they shouldn't bring rocks to a war. That was considered somewhat insensitive so the practice was stopped.

The full auto 22 that was being touted to law enforcement back in the day was called the American 180. It used a 180 round drum on top along with a laser. The laser was hyped as a huge deterrent. I went to a demo back in the day. It was a pretty fun gun to shoot. Never really caught on though. Not much use for it in LE.
