Have we become like Ancient Rome?

Uh-huh. And where do you suppose that the English got their legal system? Anything further--see my reply to "Shootin,"
above.

Where did the English get their laws from? That's really a tough question - they got it from tradition and local custom. It'd be silly to say that there was no Roman influence, but it was chiefly Germanic, Scandinavian and Christian; and is distinct from what we'd think of as "Roman" law, either pre- or post-Christian.

In conclusion, the English common law did not come from ancient Rome. The only argument that you've put forward so far that it did is that the original written language was Latin. That's not going to cut it...

Novus Ordo Seclorum?

Yeah, that wasn't a reply, it was name-calling in place of a reply.

Very un-Cicero like if you ask me, but what do I know :)

Allow my correction: The only reason that there is an entity that we call Western Civilization is "because of the church."

Allow my correction as well: There is an entity that we call Western Civilization in spite of the Church, not because of it.

If it were all up to the robed hypocrites, we'd still be stuck in the middle ages herding sheep, shoveling dung, burning witches, and dying young.

Quite right. We are all Greeks. And I do see the entirety of history as a continuum. This thread centers on our similarities to Ancient Rome--but--no less are we Greeks. And--to the extent that the Bible is the center of our lives--we are all Jews. Even "Christians" are Jews. Paul the Rabbi makes that argument rather cogently.

I wish you guys long life. I am loathe to see the world bereft of Wisdom.

Overstated or understated, the point remains. Ask the author of The Apocalypse. We are the Rome of the eschaton.
Oh, I see now. Your odd insistence that we are the Roman Empire stems from a peculiar eschatology to which you are wedded. I thought you wanted to discuss history.

We certainly do have some similarities - obsession with sex and entertainment, impatience with democracy, use of foreign soldiers, short attention span, high taxes, enemies that seem like barbarians. I wonder if Hillary Clinton will serve as our Julius Caesar, the person who brings the Republic to an end and begins an Empire?

We don't need to wait for Hillary. George II has already crossed that Rubicon. The die is already cast.

Well said, Hawkeye. I'm guessing that Bush jams on the fiddle when no one is looking.

I just really don't like baiting or sarcasm. Some folks are apprentice baiters; others are masters...

Well done Art. I've never been called a wanker so eloquently before. I actually didn't get it for a while.

You evidently know how to think critically; then you should know that there are at least 22 different ways to look at any one given topic. E.g.--Florida, CSA. When I came upon this thread, I chose one way that I thought was interesting and decided to run with it. Thank God for the 1st Amendment. No one can tell us--sub poenas dare--how we need to think. Is this a great country, or what? Is this a great forum, or what (Art Eatman notwithstanding)? God--I love a good argument. "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another (Prov. 27:17)." Solomon.

You said: If it were all up to the robed hypocrites, we'd still be stuck in the Middle Ages herding sheep, shoveling dung, burning witches and dying young. Quite right. Moreover--substitute two words and the truth remains: If it were all up to the Muslims, we'd still be stuck in the Middle Ages herding sheep, shoveling dung, burning infidels, and dying young. The fruit of cultic fanaticism. You are quite right.

" No one can tell us--sub poenas dare--how we need to think."

Very true. No argument. But rest assured that there are limits to one's freedom about HOW those thoughts are expressed.

And your point is (I mean--besides the one on top of your shoulders)?

Whoa. Get back on the road!

Okay I'm lost. We haven't just drifted we've gone out into the pasture among the cows.:D

Lindenberger...

It's okay to jump on a soapbox around here on occasion, but the pulpit crap is gettin' old. Follow? You wouldn't be posting on this board if not for a Muslim.
Give it a rest.
