Do you guys feel that gun manufacturers will continue to make a smaller 9mm handgun. Or perhaps try to duplicate the current ones in 40, "harder to do". Or have we gone as far as we can go in this effort to make the smallest carry weapon in an acceptable caliber. I say that only because popular opinion seems to be that 380 is not enough, "which I disagree with". But just for discussion sake. Are we there yet?

I'd have thought that someone's already made a 9 mm Derringer... no?

Kel-Tec made the P-11 in .40 for a few years. I have one and I can tell you it is NOT fun to shoot!

No fun at all. but I personally would not want anything smaller in 9mm or .40

I have seen some advertised in gun mags but they can keep them. I have enough trouble hitting what I aim at with the P-40.

The Kahr PM9 is a 2-finger-grip gun, and quite a bit smaller than the Kel-tec P11. I think going much smaller would pass a point of diminishing returns. More streamlined, maybe, but much smaller... i dunno..

Walther Model 9's are not a very familiar but the smallest for a long time.

The R9 is the smallest if the Walther Model 9 doesn't beat it.

No one has produced a replica of the R9. I wish they would.

I think the Kahr PM/CM guns are the smallest 9mm's that are still practical.

I tend to agree. IMO this is about as small as you can get and still be halfway comfortable and controllable to shoot.
The only smaller 9mm repeating handgun I know of is the Rohrbaugh R9. But it has some limitations the Kahrs do not, chiefly not being rated for all types of ammunition (standard pressure only). It is also quite costly. Probably the ultimate tiny 9mm was the WSP "Downsizer," only about the size of a pack of cigarettes. But it is a single-shot, and next to impossible to hold onto for even that.

CZ-Guy is your Boberg the newer XR9-S or the original slightly larger XR9? I ordered the XR9-S just a short time ago so I don't expect to get it anytime soon. I'm looking forward to a range report either way. LM

As I recall, all 3 types of the 'Walther Model 9' were chambered for .25acp (as was the Model 8).
The thread is asking "Have we made the smallest 9mm yet".

"chiefly not being rated for all types of ammunition"

I don't worry about another 40 or so f.p.s. from 9mm +P out of a 2" barrel. It's not worth the muzzle blast and additional recoil. Standard ammo is fine with me. Has anyone actually chrono'd the velocity increase from +P in a Kahr PM-9? It can't be as much as what I've seen in 4" and 5" guns and that's not all that much anyway.

I don't see any pen gun listed above .380.

Back to the 9mm. I just checked the Speer site, and here's what Speer lists:

Gold Dot Short 9mm +P is 124 gr. at 1150 fps from a 3.5" barrel

Gold Dot Personal Protection 9mm is 124 gr. at 1150 fps from a 4" barrel.

The bullet might be different, but the velocity difference sure isn't significant, +P or no +P.

There are at least 15 different cartridges in 9mm caliber, and the .380ACP is one of them. The 9x19mm Parabellum or Luger is another. Do you wish to limit the discussion to just one cartridge or the entire range in the caliber?

I think it was pretty obvious that he was referring to 9x19mm. As are most people when referring to 9mm without further specifying.

Nope. We haven't seen 2-finger grip ones yet. Someone will make one.

I can only get two fingers on my P238 and Solo.;) The P938 in 9mm will have the same grip length as the P238 so you have two right there.

definitely can be made smaller, but cost is a huge issue.

engineering a product takes into account manufacturing techniques, their limitations, and no one is going to buy it if costs to much to make.

I'd say the price will go up as manufacturing tolerances need to be tightened as the guns get smaller. Materials area huge factor too (some people aren't willing to pony up big $$ for a carbon fiber barrel for example). But generally, better materials allows less material to be used, making the product smaller in certain dimensions, or at least stronger for an equal size.

I know I was impressed when I held smith and wessons titanium cylinder alloy framed revolvers.

Its all about cost making a buck at the end of the day, not to sound evil or anything, but companies are in the business of making money.

Is the Boberg or any other gun smaller than a Rohrbaugh? They're pricey beyond my means and I haven't had an opportunity to handle one, but from what I can see they appear to be about the scale of a P3AT/LCP.

Tried a solo, Good gun just not for me, about the smallest I want is my CZ 75 compact. Not really small but comfortable and comforting.
