This is a shot intro blurb by CCI but I have seen several other videos from various people on YouTube including 22Plinkster.

The much longer 22Plinkster video on the new ammo.

It is intended as a self defense ammo for a short barreled 22 LR handgun. 22Plinkster makes is seem like it was intended for semi-auto's only due to velocity lost in revolves due to the cylinder gap but I would like to see some chrono numbers to back that up. The reason I didn't put this in the handgun section was because the first thing I thought of when I saw this ammo was squirrel hunting. Not that a good old 40gr 22LR solid don't do a fine job on them but a Jacketed hollow point that reliably opens at 22 LR pistol velocities would certainly do a number on the limb-rats. 22Plinkster does shoot it from a 16-inch barrel too into ballistic gel. The bullet seems to open reliably over a pretty broad range of velocities. I would have like to seen some chrono data to got with that. They are advertised at 950 fps from a 4-inch or shorter barrel. Wonder what that would be from a 16 or even 20 inch barrel?

I'm impressed with the bullet technology.

Can't think of much use for it.

I can't think of anything that's a good idea to shoot with a .22, that won't succumb whether the bullet expands or not.
I mean really, has anyone ever shot a squirrel, or any other varmint, with a .22 solid, and thought, "Darn, if that bullet hadn't shot clean through the critter, I would have HAD him?"

As always, shot placement accounts for 99% of shot effectiveness.

Meanwhile, someone out there thinks .22 is a good choice for self-defense, and might believe these bullets will improve it.
I know a guy who has an elderly wife armed with such a thing. Better than a sharp stick. But I don't think the ammo will make a whit of difference unless the ammo contributes to a cycling failure. Then this stuff in some random .22 autoloader pistol under stress, who knows?

The S&W and Ruger "EZ" series of guns are a godsend to the folks who might have thought a .22 was a good compromise for folks who "can't handle" a regular handgun. And they aren't .22's with all the issues that come with .22 (un)reliability.

Expansion limits penetration. I would worry that an expanding bullet wouldn’t penetrate far enough to reach the important parts. I’m not yet convinced that a regular 40 grain HV isn’t a better choice, especially in jacket weather. Is ballistic gel penetration data available?

In the 22 Plinkster video he does it informally shooting it through two layers of denim into real ballistics gel and it gets respectable pentation for a 22 LR. ~9-10inch depending on barrel length.

I have no intension of using them for self defense I am far more interested in using they in my 22LR rifle on the squirrels and varmints (groundhogs, armadillos etc). I think back in Ohio where I grew up this would be an excellent bullet for those big old ground sow whistle pigs.

SD maybe against some emaciated meth head in summer attire. But against a portly slob with winter clothing, not so much. Better than a poke in the eye, I guess.

The 950fps stated by the manufacturer makes me wonder why so low? About the same velocity as their "quiet" loads. I thought they might be a viable option for pests and varmints(yotes and groundhogs), but not at those velocities.

Heard about them and finally saw a video from CCI yesterday.

I, too, am interested in the velocity from a rifle.
Being jacketed, instead of just washed, would suggest they hold together better at elevated velocities. Yet the advertised velocity seems low.

(Edit: Oops, @buck460XVR beat me too it.)

Perhaps if they were smoking fast from a rifle barrel and the velocity statement was a minimum guaranteed, it might be very interesting…

950 from a 4" barrel is pretty good.
HV .22s only get 1250 or so from a 20" rifle barrel.

No ! The "quiet" loads are a measly 750 FPS from a fairly long barrel . 950 FPS for a 40 Grain bullet from a ported (revolver) barrel is rather good . Most .22 non hyper velocity ammo drop to sub sonic in a 4"or less non ported barrel =1050 or less . This ammo is listed as optimum for short barrel powders so probably designed to expand in the popular 2" barrels.

Yep, 950 fps from a short barrel is pretty good. CCI Stingers (also a 32gr bullet premium 22LR listed at 1640 fps) does similar (950-1050 fps) from 2.5-4 inch barrels according to Ballistics by the inch.

Yawn. The 22 rimfire is basically a short range pest killer. I have been doing so for over 75 years and a regular 40 gr. HP worked admirably and still does. Yes, this latest way to get your money makes a nice mushroom but so does the old tried and true lead bullet and for less cost I would bet.

I guess I am at the wrong forum for this one. Rimfirecenteral is probably a better audience for this one. If I see a box of these at the local Academy I will definitely be picking up a box or two and try them out on some limb-rats and up-armored-opossum. I am a sucker for "premium" 22LR. Killed a lot of ground hogs with Stingers and a few with Velocitors before I moved to the south.

Looks pretty cool to me. I've taken a lot of squirrels with a Buckmark. I'll pick up a box when I see one.

For me, it is an interesting introduction for killing small stuff. Maybe up to/including coyotes. But for a person? I will pass for any centerfire self defense bullet.

Hear, hear! Couldn't have said it better.

My guess it is due to increased friction of a jacket, similar to .38 Special loading data which shows higher velocity and lower pressure for a lead SWC vs a JHP.

I can’t imagine it would work any better on .22 class of game. I’ve killed a coyote with a .22 LR but it was close and perfect broadside on its noggin. I’ve also had them glance of possum heads. In general, .22 is pretty underwhelming on things bigger than a rabbit in my experience. I’ve shot small game with .38 Special as well and it makes me understand why the .357 was developed.

Went to Rimfire Central. I did not find, anything. I’m sure it’s in some kind of order, just don’t know what one…

I am also not thrilled with the thought of scrubbing out copper fouling in a rimfire barrels. I suppose I could wax lube it myself, but why wouldn’t we want a jacketed .22 also lubricated? It’s only going through 2-4” of barrel right?

Mostly, I’m just impressed with the technology. Building a bullet that small, and soft, with a jacket, having powder that will accelerate it to a nice speed in four inches without going past pressure limits. If I had a beater .22 pistol I’d give them a try.

Well, that’s all the need I needed. Off to find a G44, and some of this ammunition! :D

The quoted velocity of 950 fps is for a short barrel (2-4 inch) not the typical 16-inch barrel typically used for most other 22LR.
