This is an older (1951) CZ Mauser with the double set trigger system. The striker won't cock properly so I broke the rifle down and found that the (at this point please forgive me as I don't know the proper name for these parts) part that extends through the bottom of the bolt rail and catches on the part that holds the firing pin back was already partially depressed so it couldn't hold the firing pin back securely. Usually just closing the bolt causes the firing pin to snap forward. See the first photo and you can see that the lever coming from the trigger mechanism is contacting the part mentioned earlier and it is already partly depressed.

I found that if I pulled the rear trigger "setting" it prior to opening the bolt the lever dropped down leaving a gap and the bolt would cock and fire normally. See next photo of view with trigger "set."

I gather that the little screw between the triggers is to adjust the rear trigger's contact with the part that engages the bolt but it is backed out all the way in the photo and there is still excessive contact between these parts.

Is there an adjustment I am missing or does this require serious smithing?

The screw actually adjusts the sear engagement between the set-trigger and the secondary sear of the kick-off, or the part that contacts the lever attached to the actual rifles sear block when it is released to fly upward and strike the lever. Backed out all the way would give the heaviest set-trigger pull.

But regardless of where the screw is, the lever should not contact the kick-off, or at least not enough to trip the sear on the rifle with the trigger un-set.

Once set, and the set-trigger pulled, the kick-off is supposed to fly up and "knock" the rifles actual sear out of engagement with the cocking piece.

It may be that someone in the past stoned down the rifles sear block or striker in order to make the un-set trigger pull better.

In that case, you might need a new sear or cocking piece.

But it is hard to tell from the photos whether that is the case or not.

I would remove the trigger guard & set-trigger and then SLAM the bolt closed several times and see if you are getting 100% sear capture of the cocking piece every time.

If that checks out O.K. then the lever needs to be adjusted by stoning or bending until it just barely makes contact with the rifles sear & trigger kick-off when the set-trigger is un-cocked.

So the fix may be filing down the top of the lever that is touching the "kick-off" so there is some clearance?

It "may" be.

But if someone in the past has tampered with the cocking piece & sear engagement, the lever is not the problem.

And I have to assume it didn't leave the CZ factory like that.
