Hawes .357 Single Action?

Just coming here for some advice. Was browsing through a local shop earlier today and something caught my eye: a .357 Mag Single Action. It's a Hawes Marshal "something" (I think it said Marshall Medallion, but most things I'm reading online say Western Marshall so maybe I'm remembering wrong).

Anyways, it looks to be in superb shape - so good that having never heard of it I thought it might be brand new and just a new brand on the market that I haven't heard of. Looking at info though, it seems they're fairly old, so my guess is it's just well taken care of.

Asking price at the shop is $289. Probably a little wiggle room there, but at this shop not a lot. MAYBE could get them to $250, but $275 is more likely.

Any opinions on these guns? Worth it at this price?

They were made by J.P. Sauer in Germany (I think) back in the late 70's and early 80's. They feel pretty solidly built to me, especially in .357. My dad has one with a 6.5 inch barrel that he picked up a few years ago and really likes. I see them turn up in pretty decent shape for around $250 from time to time so if the one you're looking at is in really great shape and you can maybe get them to $275, might be a good deal.

These are good guns, well built and durable. Some parts interchange with Colt SAA's, although the overall frame size is significantly larger. Anything under $300 for one in good shape is fair.

When I was 16 I got one! Used it alot. They were quite good in quality and would last and last.

Talk him down some and if it's solid, buy it.

I'd buy another one at that price. We have a .44 mag Hawes Western Marshall that has been a great cowboy action gun.

A 6 1/2" .357 Hawes Western Marshall was my first Single Action, wish I had kept it. Good solid gun.

The J.P. Sauer line of SA revolvers was sold by Hawes back in the early '60's, basically taking over for Hy-Hunter as the U.S. importer. There were a number of different models available in .357, .44 Magnum, and .45LC. Also interchangeable cylinders were available in 9mm. and .45 ACP. Barrel length was 6" and they weighed around 44 oz.

The Marshal series was offered in a variety of finishes: Federal Marshal (color case hardened frame, brass backstrap and trigger guard, blued barrel and cylinder), Silver City Marshal (nickel frame, brass backstrap and trigger guard, blued barrel and cylinder, pearlite grips), Western Marshal (blued finish with rosewood grips), Texas Marshal (nickel finish with pearlite grips), Montana Marshal (blued finish with brass backstrap and trigger guard), and the Chief Marshal (larger frame, adjustable sights, blued finish with rosewood grips).

bannock: Thanks for that listing. It's definitely the Montana Marshall model. I remember the name being two M's, and the brass accents stuck in my memory a bit.

Hmm. Maybe I'll put it on layaway . With Christmas to buy for the family I really shouldn't buy another immediately, and they'll usually negotiate a bit lower if you'll do layaway (because they expect a certain percentage of layaways to fall through so they keep the money and item anyways).

I owned a Western Marshal in 44 Mag for many years, and it was accurate and well made. I took my first handgun deer with it, back in the day.
I chose it over the Ruger SBH because of the way it felt in my hand, with the oversize grips. I eventually sold it and bought a T. Contender in 357 Maximum.

i have a hawes .357 chief marshall i would like to sale. ive had it for 6 yrs. great gun. bought for a side arm when hunting in colorado. can;t hunt up there anymore due to back issues. anybody interested email me and ill send pics of.
