I only have two shotguns at the moment, both of which are strictly hunting guns. They are the benelli super black eagle 2 and a ruger red label over and under 20ga. I know that either of these guns could be used for HD, but i want a pump shotgun that is there for one purpose, defending the home and family. My criteria are that it be 12ga, reliable, and reasonably priced. Any suggestions?

What action type? For absolute cheapest, a pump from Remington or Mossberg will get the thumbs up from a majority of folks here - OTOH, a semi will also work well, as would a SxS coach gun

Check your local Pawn Shops.
If you are willing to put out a little money and some elbow grease any Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 will do fine for the purpose. You can go as fancy or cheap as you like with fancy extras at that point as long as you keep the basics covered.
I picked up a 870 last week for $150, at that price you really cant go wrong. Thats a classic shotgun that will last a lifetime and still be defending my grandkids house when I take the dirt nap.

Dirt Nap, now that's an interesting way to put it.

Yep, it doesn't make any difference, Mossberg 500 or Remington 870, just depends on which one you like better.

as asked before, what action? also, what kind of price range? this will get your questions answered better/faster....

What 1oz said. I chose the 870 for me, my wife, and my daughter. No matter, whose house or which side of the bed, the guns are all the same.

12 ga., reliable and reasonably priced.

Moss 500 or Rem 870. Give the Pardner Protector (870 clone) a good look too. And last and least in my list due to plastic trigger guard, etc. is the Maverick (Mossberg 500 Clone).

Any of these will work perfectly for a Home Defense shotgun. If you decide to go the thrifty route, I picked up a Pardner Protector at Dick's for $170 out the door. I'm perfectly satisfied with the quality and function of this shotgun and some in-depth reviews pit it head-to-head with the 870, if not better in some areas.

Brand new shotgun vs. Used for same price, What's to lose?

well what i bought was not most everybody"s cup of tea,a s/w 916t but it is working fine and two gunsmiths checked it out, said it should be as good as any, now have told me if i have any problems they will be glad to work on it,so i aint worried about it".one owns a short 916 police riot, never a problem, anyway he is doing my barrell 28" to 20" and reinstalling my bead for 20.00.did see a mossburg for 130.00. great deal.

Remington 870 or Mossberg 500. Your choice. BTW load is more important. Low Recoil 00 Buck followed by Low Recoil Foster Slug gets my vote in 12 ga.
