Hi all - I'm considering getting a 20ga pump action platform, primarily for HD and possibly for shooting foster/brenneke when/if I finally go deer/gator sometime this year.

One possibility is the EAA SAR 20ga pump action shotgun, model SARPA20203, sku 160410 (see this eacorp product page.) Price tag from a vendor is around $270'ish.

Posts scattered throughout the interweebz suggest these are a-ok for the money. I can live with that. But I would like to confirm with you guys if possible. Does anyone here have first-hand or reliable second-hand experience with this shotgun? More importantly, can these be customized (say, add a scope to assist when shooting slugs)?

I could go for a Mossberg 500 Super Batam Combo 20ga which comes with two barrels (one rifled for slugs and one that is not). But it is almost twice the price (and I will have a very hard time pacifying my lovely wife - she strictly controls my budget :D) The combo goes around $500'ish.

Or, I could simply get a used Stevens 311 SxS for relatively cheaper price (around $200) strictly for HD (to complement my primary HD handgun). But then using it for shooting slugs accurately beyond certain distance is out of the question. I guess I could rely on my mosin for hunting (which I'm going to sporterize anyways.)

So those are my competing options:

  1. Mosberg 500 Super Batam Combo - everything I want but my wife will kill me for spending out of my allotted zombiepocalypse toy budget :p
  2. Stevens 311 - cheap good enough for HD, but that's about it.
  3. EAA SAR 20ga - within my budget, but I don't know anything about its quality or customizibility (sp?)

On paper, the EAA SAR 20ga looks like a good compromise. Less than $300, could be used for shooting foster/brenneke slugs (with the right choke), and it fits the bill as a HD platform.

BUT, and this is the big but :p... is it a sufficiently reliable shotgun (for the money)? And, can it be extended, with reasonable ease and cost, with a scope mount?

Thanks.

btw, I know nothing about shotguns, and I'm just learning my way into the realm of firearms :D

They are an OK shotgun, but accessories are all but non-existent. A Mossberg 500 would be a much better choice IMO. The base model should be around the same price as the SAR, and you can always add a rifled barrel later if you decide you need it. If it does need repair parts 20 or 30 years down the road, they will be available.

Hmmmm, in these two factors into consideration, I guess the SAR is a no-go option for what I'm looking for. Thanks!

Oh wow, those past deals are certainly an eye opener. I will keep looking. Thanks!

In normal times Walmart can order any Mossberg from the special order catalog hidden behind the gun counter. Worth a try.
