Always glad to hear that about other parts of the country. Here in Arizona no one even looks twice. I carry concealed but see several people every week carry open. Many are women which I'm always glad to see.

I CC a Kahr PM40 but if I'm on my way to or back from hiking or camping and I have my Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan on my hip in my custom leather pancake, I won't bother taking it off an no one bats an eye in AZ. First 2 cylinders are .45 colt snake shot, hardcast Buffalo Bore penetrators in the other 4--Lots of moody free range cattle here in AZ1 I've had a couple be very agressive/challenging (I backed down) and one head butted my dog and sent him flying back about 7 feet.

Never had to shoot anything (thank goodnes) but a very aggresive coyote who kept stalking my camp and would not scare off with lights, yelling, or banging pots and pans together. I choose just to pepper him and he ran off.

I hope someday I can just stroll about with an ak47... and nobody would say anything, except maybe, "hey man! Nice AK!"... To which I would reply "thanks bro!"

We can all dream :)

If a cop asks me why I'm carrying, I won't answer. Not his business. I can have this attitude because in Arizona we don't get quizzed by cops about why we're carrying.

"Well, if you'd lay off the doughnuts, Officer, I wouldn't need a gun. I could carry you."

I notice open carrying a lot more. Most of the time it is not intentional as it is required to have a carry permit when carrying in a car. I have noticed a few times getting out to pump gas without bothering to conceal my pistol. I have noticed a few guys doing the same thing this past summer. In late August I stopped in a city near where my hunting property is and ran into the local Tractor Supply store. I forgot I was carrying and didn't bother to cover my pistol. While standing in line to check out I noticed another guy open carrying and when I got out to the parking lot a tow truck driver was changing a tire on a woman's car in the parking lot. He was open carrying as well. Seems to be pretty common in rural areas in my state.

I would answer simply to be polite. It might be a little bit of a political play to say I would rather have an LEO on my side than suspicious of me. I carried when I was in AZ, and I carry either concealed or open any time I am not headed on base (Marine Corps). When you carry a 1911 it can be difficult to conceal anyways in 90* heat without sweating to death.

I am polite to anyone who asks me anything. It has led to a few more people carrying and I would rather have more than less. Never had a yelling match with anyone, though some would ask stupid questions.

"Do you think that is safe around your kids?"
"Yep, since I am borrowing it from them" Shuts them up pretty quick.

"Aren't you afraid someone might start something because you have that?"
"Not half as scared as they will be when they realize it ain't the only one I got" Works most of the time too.

"You're going to shoot your foot off someday."
"Only if it tries to rob me"

"Do you really need to flaunt that thing around my kids?"
"Nope. I just like letting you know your kids are safe while I'm here."

"Aren't those things dangerous?"
"Not until it meets another one pointed my way."

Yeah, I gave up logic long ago as most anti's don't want to hear it. Now I just try to surprise them a little.

I always thought it was illegal to get into a vehicle while OC as it is then considered concealed. Can anyone elaborate on that?

Edit: I now see that you have to have a CCW to open carry in a vehicle. But you can still open carry on foot. If you don't have a CCW and get into a car while OC, then you can get in trouble.

Not in Virginia. Think of it this way. Your openly carried gun is always going to be hidden from someone, even if you're just standing at a magazine display in a book store. Same thing if you are seated in a restaurant at a booth where your firearm is hidden from common observation by the wall of the booth. In either of these cases, the gun is not visible to some or most folks but it is still considered to be openly carried. Carrying in a vehicle is no different in my state.

I don't OC but had an LEO notice my CC when trading in a car for a new purchase recently. When leaning over to move some stuff from the old to the new, apparently I flashed my P238 a bit (in an inside holster near right front pocket) and the unseen officer standing 20 feet behind me commented "glad you remembered that!" with a big smile. He waited until no one else was around to make his comment, and I noticed his hair was a bit more grey than mine...

Great post gdc

Pretty much same here in southwest Missouri. I had the sheriffs depth called out to my house again a couple weeks ago, by a "dear" neighbor, because I was shooting in the empty lot/acreage across from house. The sheriff showed up, said its me again, and I said yup. "What took so long" jokingly. WA had been shooting about a half hour. He laughed, said the usual. Someone calls they gotta check it out. He said when he got the call he knew who it was about, he has come out before, same reason. He told dispatch its an ongoing thing. Not that I'm shooting but the complaint from the neighbor.
He didn't bother us, as usual, only asked what I was carrying on my hip at the time.

Heh! Very nice!

Brought to mind the days of yore when Al Jaffee used to write his "Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions" comics for Mad Magazine!
