Excellent information about hearing protection, including a table of gunfire noise levels. http://www.e-a-r.com/hearingconservation/faq_main.cfm

    Peak Sound Pressure Levels (SPLs)
    Type of Gun SPL (dB)
    .44 Revolver 170 dB
    45 Automatic 165 dB
    M-16 160 dB
    .357 Revolver 160 dB
    12 Gauge Shotgun 155 dB
    .38 Revolver 150 dB
    .22 Rifle 145 dB

Home Depot carries the red NRR 21 Stow Aways for $18. When they're not red they're sold to us as "Shotgunners" for a higher price. For $14 you can get the clunkier NRR 20 muffs.

Regardless of price, if the muff doesn't have an NRR with it you should not buy it.
