As a young guy with some hearing damage from headphones and overly loud car stereos already I would urge everyone to take hearing protection seriously and not worry about looking uncool with muffs and plugs or anything like that. Hearing damage doesn't always include tinnitus and it can be very annoying without it even.

I'm curious what ear protection soldier wear? Whats the average guy in iraq got in his hears? Radio/ear muff combo?

It's like doing hardcore martial arts workouts all the time. After a certain amount of damage the cumulative pounding you take in practice is worse than what you're likely to get out in the real world

I Think Hearing Loss..

would be an appropriate consequence for the disrespectful clowns that drive in residential areas with Amplified Bass going full blast.

If I could see one of these idiot's head explode, It'd make my day! :O)

Take Care

Those numbers at the barrel aren't the numbers at your ear . . . . .

Reason I am saying this is using those numbers, and even with doubling up, you might not reduce the SPL enough to not cause damage.

I use electronic muffs solo ( I think they are 28's) and have never noticed the full hoouse 44 mag loads I shoot as being loud . . . . . .

That aside, all the usual cautions - you only get one set of ears and its just plain dumb to trash them for no good reason.

Just one shot from it if and when needed could lead to a lifetime of hearing problems.
I'm there--and it only took one shot from a full power .357Mag load out of a 4" barrel. Yup, inside and without hearing protection. Hearing loss in my left ear is still very noticeable over a year later--WITHOUT special testing. :(

I was almost totally deaf for about a half an hour after the shot.

So, what makes you think that the SPLs are taken at the barrel instead of at the ear?
