I remember awhile ago seeing someone post a picture of their custom mosin nagant that used a barrel from a machine gun re-threaded for the nagant. Where could I get a heavy barrel for a nagant?

But you're going to pay a good bit more for the barrel than the MN.
Is this being done strickly as a"fun" type project? If not, I'm not sure what gain there wouuld be. Little to none I would think as the MN barrels are no light weights to begin with.
Not trying to be critical of your project, I guesss I don't hav a clear picture of what end you're trying to achieve.

I'd love a finn M-39 too...why aren't they easier to find?

You could try an RPK barrel. Apexgunparts.com has sewer-bore barrels for $30 that you could chop the end off and rechamber. They also have an SG43 barrel that has demilled holes in it (who knows where).

Then there's the problem with the gas port holes. I guess you could just tap in a screw and weld over it, or turn it down and press a sleeve over it. I can't think of any heavy barrel machineguns that don't have a gas hole.

it was probably one of my project rifles you saw with a heavy machine gun barrel.
this one is from a czech UK59. there is a guy on gunbroker who sells them, just do a search on mosin or uk59 and you should be able to find them.
since the pictures were taken i've turned it to a straight taper and i'm going to machine a barrel block to mount it into the stock so the action and the barrel will be free floating.
its .950" at the muzzel and tapers to 1.170", its 23 1/4" long to the face of the receiver.
i should have these two barrels back next week. one is a finned madsen lmg barrel and the other is a russian maxim barrel. the madsen barrel is has a 7mm bore and i'll probably do a 7mmx54r wildcat with it and the maxim barrel has the standard .312 bore for a 7.62x54r.
all of my future mosin projects will be built on hex receivers. the round receivers are junk compared to a hex. hex receivers are stiffer, have an inner torque shoulder and full threads.
don't believe the rumor about mosins only feeding 7.62x54, this one feeds 220 swift.

Nice looking rifles, I really like my Mosin. I'm interested to see a stock put on either one of those actions.

the 220 swift rifle has a take off barrel from a remington 722 that was originaly in .222. i rethreaded and rechambered it to 220 swift, then modified the bolthead & the ejector/interuptor. here is a more information on it.
here is a pic of my finned barrel project rifle. i still have to finish shaping the stock, mount the scope & rework the bolt handle. i think i have the mounts figured out. i'm going to mount a short section of picatiny rail the the receiver then install a dnz ar-15 mount backwards on it. once i get a mill i'm going to start making my own mosin mounts since i don't like any of the mounts that are currently on the market.

That is some nice work there DJim.. I like those kinda projects..
I think what might be the best way to handle the scope mount issue is relocating the bolt handle back behind the split bridge in the reciever and then mount rail to the top of the receiver like this guy did.. (you've probably seen it)

the rest of the rifle isn't my style for my mosin, but I do admire the way he addressed the bolt and the scope mount..
that said, I wish I had half the skills that either one of you two guys have..

i've already done one like that & it works well, but sometimes to like to keep the quirks that make a mosin a mosin.
i've always thought it was funny how some people bad mouth a mosin because of its forward bolt handle but if you show them a mannlicher schoenauer they drool all over its forward bolt handle

If all you're after is a standard heavy barrel, the M39's have got that covered. Mine takes dozens of rapid fire rounds before it even starts to get warm to the touch, so warping is much less of an issue.

I've gotten some fantastic deals on ones with busted stock wrists. There's more than enough wood in the wrist to make a very solid repair. I've experimented and a combination of brass rod and gorilla glue is the strongest I've found yet.

How did you put that pistol grip on your mosin? That is something that I want to do with mine.

that one is a bannerman conversion from the 1920's.
i based my bolt & ejector/interuptor mods on it.
i have a stud inletted into the wrist of the stock that the pistol grip bolts to.
you have to remove the pistol grip to remove the bottom metal.
eventually i'm going to have a one piece stock machined or moulded for it.
i've been studying the mini-windrunner stock and may do something very similar on another project & i've been thinking about modifying the fa enterprises mauser target stock for use on my maxim barreled mosin
