Good win for us.

Waiting for the details, too. When does this take effect? A lot of law passed and signed has a sort of 'waiting period'; not sure about SCOTUS rulings...? ?

Just got the CBS "breaking News Alert E-mail", but it said 'details soon'...

I'll wager that Komrade Katie Kouric is probably choking on her coffee right now...

Court: A constitutional right to a gun

Answering a 127-year old constitutional question, the Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to have a gun, at least in one’s home. The Court, splitting 5-4, struck down a District of Columbia ban on handgun possession.

Justice Antonin Scalia’s opinion for the majority stressed that the Court was not casting doubt on long-standing bans on gun possession by felons or the mentally retarded, or laws barring guns from schools or government buildings, or laws putting conditions on gun sales.

In any case, the right was won by our forefathers a couple of centuries ago. SCOTUS just acknowledged that fact, at least to a degree.

This is great, but don't get too excited yet... in the "syllabus" under section 2, they left the door open for future AWB's by including the words "unusually dangerous".... and they couched the 2A as being for the defense of the home, and not (as far as I can tell) for the community or state.

Am I wrong here?

Tis a good thing

I still can't believe that it was 5 to 4. We have 4 justices who are so blind they cannot see logic. Cannot see intent.

Oh well, at least it was a win on our part.

Haven't read the details, but this is fantastic.

Edit: The 5-4 was disappointing, if not unexpected.

When it comes to rolling back import restrictions, executive orders and other nonsense the fight is just beginning.

however, we have someplace to start. this is a big win and a great first step.

Just did a quickie skim...

From what I am able to tell, it basically just says that DC must be "shall issue" for licensing, permits, etc... and specifically said "in the home."

Not great, but the whole thing is better than a poke in the eye with a dull stick...

5-4? Wow! It was also 5-4 for the decision that it is "cruel and unusual" punishment to enforce the death penalty for violent child rapists, the other day. Scary that it was this close on the 2nd amendment - I think we need more conservative judges. Whatever we do, we've got to keep Obama out of the White House.

I think some of these judges are "sickos", judging from some of their decisions lately (notwithstanding the Heller case).

...it doesnt address licensing, registration, etc. looks like all that is still in place, depending on the states' laws.... Heller can register his firearm, and can get a license to keep it in his home for defense. Doesn't say anything about a license to carry it to Wal-Mart....

It specifically mentions the right of self-defense. AWESOME!!!!

As the quotations earlier in this opinion demonstrate,
the inherent right of self-defense has been central to the
Second Amendment right. The handgun ban amounts to a
prohibition of an entire class of “arms” that is overwhelmingly
chosen by American society for that lawful purpose.

It is no answer to say, as petitioners do, that it is permissible
to ban the possession of handguns so long as the
possession of other firearms (i.e., long guns) is allowed. It
is enough to note, as we have observed, that the American
people have considered the handgun to be the quintessential
self-defense weapon. There are many reasons that a
citizen may prefer a handgun for home defense: It is easier
to store in a location that is readily accessible in an emergency;
it cannot easily be redirected or wrestled away by
an attacker; it is easier to use for those without the upperbody
strength to lift and aim a long gun; it can be pointed
at a burglar with one hand while the other hand dials the
police. Whatever the reason, handguns are the most popular weapon chosen by Americans for self-defense in the
home, and a complete prohibition of their use is invalid.
