Hello, I just sold one of my pistols to someone from another state through an online auction website. My question then is, Can i just ship it directly to his FFL dealer myself, or do I need my FFL dealer to ship to his FFL dealer. How does the whole ordeal work??

Please advise
Thanks

As long as the receiving dealer will accept it (some won't) it's legal to ship directly to the buyer's FFL. Otherwise, you're going to have to go through a FFL on your end as well.

Yes you can ship to the FFL yourself if the receiving FFL is ok with it.

Non-FFL's shipping the firearm must do so via common carrier. UPS & FEDEX require the item to be sent overnight - expensive. Because of this you're almost better off having a local FFL perform the transfer as they are allowed to ship via US Mail (usually priority with tracking) - a lot cheaper. Less headaches and better records this way...

Great, when 2 people knowledgeable in this stuff both say the same thing, then I must be true.

So i will call the receiving FFL dealer and try to see if i can ship the item to directly myself.

another question though: Does the transfer rules differ from state to state? Or is pretty much the same from any state to any state?? --with the exception of CA and NYC I'm sure

Pretty much the same state to state. You will need to include a copy of your Driver's license so they can log it into their books. Without being able to ID you, the receiver can't correctly log it in.

If the FFL requires it. Some can read/will use the return address.
