All I have an 870 Police with bead sight barrel. The Remington does not have the bead stuck right into the barrel. Instead there is a little "platform" the bead sits on top of. What I am wanting to know is what is the correct sight picture?

Should that little platform be visible as in the left, or should I just see the bead as on the right?

Thanks in advance!

It is going to be subjective, you don't want to force your cheek into the stock, but you still want a decent cheek weld. The only way to be sure is to shoot it. If slugs, you only have one hole, if you are doing buck or birdshot, you will want a pattern board and a center point to shoot at. After the shot you dissect the pattern with a horizontal line through the center of the Point of Aim and find the average of your pattern. If 60% is above the POA, your gun shoots 60/40, if below POA you deduct it would be 40/60. Almost all my guns set up where I can see a bit of ramp on the vent ribs, if they have a mid bead I usually see just a bit of rib between it and the front bead. They shoot about 60/40 or 65/35% for me. My trap gun shoots about 90/10% or almost a foot high at 35 yards.

What kudu said.

I've noticed that my short 12 gage tends to throw buck shot high at about 10 yards. In other words I have to point the gun at the crotch to get a chest hit. I could be flinching a little too. Mine doesn't have a bead ramp.

With your Bead post (ramp), I would guess to hold dead on.

The best way to check is to shoot your gun. Reload.. shoot... buy more ammo... repeat.

Depends on the kind of shooting; Slugs or buck, the second sight picture you drew is fine. Clays or birds with shot, the first is better. With my 20" barrel with the same bead you have I shoot the second sight picture, as I don't shoot Trap or pheasants with that barrel.
