Hi Everyone!
Just signed up, but been reading the forum for a long time.

So this is my problem:
I am going away to school (for gunsmithing!) and need a safe place to store my rifles in the house I will be renting.

Being a gunsmithing program, I will obviously have guns on hand, but the ones I am concerned about aren't the junky project guns, but my M1 Carbine, Ruger 10/22, and my M1903A3.

My uncle suggested I build a secure crate to store them in, similar to type used to transport military long-arms en-mass. The area is a safe part of N.C. so the most I will need is maybe a pad lock or 2 on the out side.

Does anyone have any suggestions or plans? Google was of some help, but most of the results I got were for converting surplus military crates into coffee tables, reloading component storage crates, etc.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Jim

short of a small/cheap safe....which some will suggest.....I am inclined to try a worksite chest. Knaack/Greenlee/Ridgid....to name a few. Will have two recessed padlocks, which will defeat most boltcutters....and with a few mods...would work. I plan on drilling, lining the exterior with 2X(4s or 6s or 8s)....which will cover the exterior carry handles, and the seams of the lid when closed. Can go so far as to stain or varnish for a wooden chest effect.
Add enough dead weight, be it ammo, reload components, firearms or even canned goods, will get heavy enough to keep from being picked up and carried out, at least not by a single intruder.
and just for effect....the bottom edge of the chest...I am going to coat with a good slick....bearing grease....try and get a grip on that
