Help- can't close the action on my new o/u, what's the problem?

Hello all. Brought home my first o/u today, a new Lanber 2087. I discovered that once the gun was broke open, it can't be closed it without moving the break-open lever to the side (same as you do when opening an o/u).

If I try to close it normally, the barrel lugs can't clear the locking plate, which won't budge. Once I move the lever (which moves the locking plate back), the lugs clear the locking plate and gun will lock closed normally.

Is this normal for a new o/u? Will it loosen up to the point where it can be closed w/o having to move the lever, like other over/unders I've handled?

I had Spartan coach gun that did the same thing. I had to remove some metal with a file. I was able to get it to close very smoothly but it took a while because I had to remove the metal a little at a time and then try it out each time. I didn't want to remove to much. The problem you are having maybe different. If you don't know what you are doing it is best left up to a Gunsmith. If it has a warranty you can send it in for a fix. Lanber O/Us are pretty good shotguns.

I doubt it will loosen up over time.

This is pretty bad news. I would hate to start attacking a new gun with a file in the hopes that I could fix the problem. I am not sure about Lanber warrantees, since it is a Spanish-based company. MAX100, thanks for the info...if there are any specific details you could give me as to how you went about your fix, I would appreciate it.

Anybody else with input or experience with this sort of issue?

After reading your post again your problem sounds a little different than the one I had. On mine the locking plate would not clear the top of the lug and the lever would not close. On yours it sounds as though the front of the lug has to much metal. Maybe towards the bottom. It is hard to say without looking at it. It is not a major problem. A good gunsmith who works on shotguns would have no problem fixing it and it would not cost you that much if you know of one local.

If you bought it new at a dealer, I would take it strait back to that dealer.

That is not normal.

Some dealers may take it back but dealers can not Guarantee the new firearms they sale. Only the manufacture of the gun can do that. After all it is the manufactures fought, not the dealers. Anyone who buys a gun should check it over good before they lay their money down.

The gun is defective.
If it was new when you bought it, take it back for a full refund or exchange.

Any reputable dealer should not question it.

BTW: It may just be dried out Spanish olive oil. Try putting some good gun grease on the locking surfaces and see if it will close.
