So my LGS has two guns that just came in.......
An absolutely mint (unfired?) 1950s Colt Police Positive .38spl. Blued, 4".
And a pre-1968 FN/Browning 1910 in about 90% condition. .380 with just a hint of edge wear.
He's asking $400 each, and I can only afford one!
I would probably shoot the Browning more, but the Colt is more pleasing to look at and play with.....
Aaaargh.....what should I do?!

I had a mint Browning Model 1910 and while the craftsmanship was superb on the gun the lack of decent sights, a tiny safety, and a so-so trigger relegated it to just occasional range use.

I think the Colt Police Positive would be a lot more fun to play with and I have always been a fan of older Colt revolvers.

I guess it would depend on your current collection and if you're trying to fill any gaps. If I were choosing between those two for my own collection, I'd probably go with the 38 Colt revolver.

If you truly can't decide and want both equally as much, you could put $200 down on both and work on getting them both out.

One way to know... tell yourself you are going to flip a coin and go with the result. If you decide you don't like your result after the flip, well... there's your answer.

BTW I vote for the revolver, but I am a revolver person anyway so that doesn't mean too much.

This gunshop doesn't do layaways...:(
I think I am leaning toward the Colt.....Ive got plenty of old revolvers, but don't own a single Colt wheelgun at the moment- and the condition on this thing is incredible. I probably won't shoot it much, if at all, but it would be a "My Precioussssss...cough, cough" kind of gun every time I uncase it.
:alien:;)

I'd be all over that Colt. I borrowed one from an instructor once because the gun I was going to use for the course I was taking had been stolen just before. The Colt was a very smooth shooter. You can't lose money on it.

For a Colt Police Positive to have any more than moderate collector value, it would have to be in really pristine shape, say 99%. Sounds like this one is. If the original box comes with the gun all the better. But now you have a decision to make. Shooting even as little as a box of ammo through it might lower that 99% number. I'm thinking drag lines on the cylinder. The more you shoot it the less it is worth, up to a point. The actual depreciation would only be a few percentage points, but it is something to think about.

The Browning also has moderate collector's value, but you can shoot it and not lower its value. Be sure to get new springs if you do.

Having said all of this........ I'd grab the Colt and shoot the snot out of it! :what:

How was the reliability/ammo sensitivity of your 1910? I won't keep an auto if its a picky feeder.....

I mainly stayed with standard 95 gr. FMJ ammo; nothing in any sort of JHP configuration. Even as well built as the gun was I just couldn't see ever using it for concealed carry. I eventually sold it to pay for a new S&W Model 638 with a 2 1/2" barrel for the wife of a friend of mine who wanted a revolver for CCW.

Personally, I'd snatched that colt as their first customer of the morning. I'd be sitting there when they opened.

Yep, I'm thinking I'll call first thing tomorrow and get them to flip the tag on the Colt for me until I can get off work. Thanks everybody for helping me over my decision making disorder!

Here's hoping they didn't sell it this afternoon!

Lord knows I'm one of the best procrastinators out there, just ask my wife. As much as it pains me to admit, I've lost out on a couple of great deals over the years because of it. One was a Dan Wesson pistol pack. Their 357 revolver with the 2",4"6"and 8" barrels. $500.00. Still haunts me 25 years later

For me, it would be an easy decision to go with the FN/Browning 1910. This is because while I do own a 38 Special pistol and I do load for it, 38 Special scares me because of the potential to double-charge a case with the small powder charges, so I'd learn to load 380.

Well the decision might already be made for him though.:( Much as I dislike spending what I can't afford to, this particular instance might be a eat Ramen Noodles and PBJ sandwiches for a month or two kind of deal. I have been there before for a sweet deal on a firearm and in retrospect I was glad that I did it.

Well??? We all are waiting.:)
Well, he was closed Monday, so I ran in there today on my lunch break. And the winner is.........

You guessed it. Both guns are sold. :(:uhoh:

I might still have a shot at the Colt though, as that fella hasn't paid yet. He has till Friday to settle up.

I DID snag a very nice 1961 Ruger MK1 langschnassen though for $250. Since there is a two-day waiting period on handguns here I will be back there on Friday anyway.......

Keeping my fingers crossed......;)

Sorry to hear about the guns being sold but you did get a nice Ruger (with a long barrel?), for $250. Here's hoping you can still get the Colt Police Positive!
