I will be buying a new rifle in the next couple of months. After having looked at some guns, I'm still trying to figure out which would suit my needs the best. Here is what I am looking for:

1) Under $800 for the gun alone (no scope)
2) Synthetic or wood, etiher is OK, but if it is a synthetic stock I want a GOOD synthetic stock.
3) Something very accurate: I will use this for both hunting and range time. I may shoot out to 3-400 yards at the range, nothing over 200 yards while hunting.
4) Either stainless or blued, perhaps stainless would be preferred, but not absolutely necessary.
5) Somehting that already has upgrades such as floating or bedding, so I don't have to worry about that after buying it.

So, basically I want a .308 capable of good accuracy out to 300-400 yards, ready to go out of the box, but yunder $800. Can that be done?

I have looked at the Tikka T3 and it looks and feels really nice, but so do the Browning, Ruger, Savage, etc.

Ideas?

Todd

The others you could look at is HOWA 1500, MARLIN XR-7, VANGUARD (IS A HOWA) the marlin has a good trigger by the reviews and as a good general rule most say is an great out of the box moa the last I could recomend is the remington 700 nice as well they offer suntheic stocks hoage some come with scopes others do not under the 800.00 mark

on another post per gotime says bud's has the remington 700 in .308 for 600 shipped you can refer to his post

I like the Tikka T3 Hunter (wood stock) as well as the Browning. I have a T3 Hunter in 7mag and one in 308, both are outstanding and accurate rifles. I also have a browning x-bolt in 7mm-08, also very accurate but have not taken it out enough to give it both thumbs up yet.

Remington 700 in one of the Varmint models, I have the SPS, which is a terrific rifle, but I will probably swap out the stock for a higher grade synthetic at some point in the future.

+1 On the Remington 700 SPS, my friend has one that was very accurate. I also like the 700 police again another very accurate rifle

I have a Savage 10FP and I'm very pleased with it. However, the standard stock is junk. I replaced mine with a McMillan A-5 but doing that would push you over your price range. I do believe they have some available with better stocks for right around the price you're looking for.

The Accutrigger is the best out of the box trigger I've ever used as well. For what that's worth.

Get the Remington 700 SPS Tactical, and then you got about $200 towards a scope, they came with the Houge Overmold stocks, which has an aluminum bedding block, and can be 110% free floated with some sandpaper or a dremel.

My SPS Varmit shoots great, but it's gonna wear an HS stock in the near future.

See if you can find an older Tikka Whitetail Hunter (595). I have one and it shoots great. If not the I understand the newer Tikka T-3 is great. Also look hard at the Savage. All are at the lower price point, however, they are solid rifles. Also check with Nagels Gun Shop - San Antonio Tx 210-342-9893. They are big and have alot of older inventory. Good Luck.

Ruger M77 .308 + Springfield Armory Scope 7.62 + Georgia Arms 168 grain match grade. Rugers twist is for the 168grain the scope is for 168grain and the ammo is 168grain. You should be able to do it all for around $800 to $900.:D

Not sure if your focus might be more on hunting and outright accuracy, in which case there are indeed better choices, but for kind of price I would be tempted to pick up an iconic 'Right Arm of the Free World' aka an FN FAL.

Savage 10 FP, nothing will be any more accurate on a regular basis.
Great gun for the money, with very good reviews; but according to some it may need some stock work. Get a good scope...Carl Ziess. Order of importance...1.Shooter...2.Scope...3.Rifle...4.Ammo

Remington 700 LTR in .308. Best of all worlds with short, heavy profile fluted barrel and quality fully bedded synthetic stock. Add optics and never look back.

the SPS tactical remington or the 10fcp-k savage.. I own both.. I have not shot the 10fcp-k yet but have been reading about insanely good groups with them. it has the accustock and people are saying it really works well. My 700 shoots really really well too..

both well under $800

I'd second TexasEd's suggetions for the Tikkas! I've got a Tikka 595 in .308 that I just love. Great trigger, and sub-MOA with a lot of different factory ammo. The T3 is also a good choice.

Truthfully, these days guns are so good it's hard to get a dog. The proven accuracy on a budget performers are the Remingtons and Savage police rifles. I like the Remington trigger better than the Savage, but they both have their following. If this is to be a hunting gun too. you also need to think about weight. Generally, accuracy will cost you in weight, so there's a trade off there.

Yup.

As others have pointed to already, a Weatherby Vanguard or Howa 1500 can be purchased in either wood or synthetic in your price range and they're excellent shooters. I prefer the 24" barrel on the Vanguard. Mine's a 30-06, almost a twin to the .308.
